If he's good enough he'll survive, that was never the question. The issue is that if he only gets, say, 1 year as starter on his rookie contract it could cost him a metric fuckton of money on his 2nd deal.
Why does everyone assume they won't play Penix out of the gate? His upside is massively higher than Cousins. Their combined salaries are equal to one top tier QB. The owner is old as dirt and desperate to win. I think they'd eat the Cousins contract without blinking if the coach says Penix is the better option in game 1.
Cousins is very tradeable cap wise for them also. All a new team would have to eat is $12.5m this year and $27.5m next year. That's peanuts for a top 10-15 QB. Some QB gets hurt in training camp or early in the season they may move him.
Cousins is a good QB coming off a shitty injury. The Falcons were kind of retarded to sign him, especially if they knew they were going to draft a QB. The chance of Cousins being 100% are not good. Chances are decent that he's likely to get/stay hurt and just not play a lot this year. I wouldn't be surprised if Penix plays more than Cousins this year.
I don’t know that they knew they were drafting a QB. They had the 8th pick with teams picking 1-3 all needing QBs and probably didn’t think they’d get a top QB so they signed Cousins and then Penix continued to rise to the point teams felt he was top 10 QB.

Sounds like Cousins is Nebraska Classy.
But how will the NFL survive Atlanta drafting him?!!!

While Atlanta eats $90,000,000 in dead cap if they trade him this year and $65,000,000 next. Come on.
