I’ve always had a hard time resolving my feelings about Paopao.
I dislike him, feel like he’s a bad recruiter and crappy coach, and yet also acknowledge he recruited and coached a string of great UW TE that were highly drafted.
Austin Seferian-Jenkins (Second Round), Will Dissly (Fourth Round), and Drew Sample (Second Round). Then Cade Otton was never not coming to UW but still counts as one of his signees. Even one of his Zona TE’s was top 15 in the country in TE catches and yards in 2021 or 2022 or something. That McLaughlin kid.
So like, he sucks and I hate him, and yet there are solid results.
Dissly and Sample were layups and Dissly was actually a DL coming out of high school. He might’ve switched at UW to cover for POW POWs shitty recruiting and lack of depth.
I actually think PooPoo is a pretty good position coach, his recruiting leaves a lot to be desired. One of his recruits at UW chose Air Force over him. Yikes.
pao Pao will be shown the door in 2 years when the program has semi-stabilized and Fisch can upgrade. If he doesn’t, then he ain’t the guy and we’re fucked either way.
I don't know I can't remember the last time UW was bad at tight end and it's the one group we can half ass and still be virtually guaranteed to be at least above average at every year.
I think these are the reasons I have a hard time resolving my feelings. He can’t seem to recruit for the life of him. Anyone he targets that has any buzz he can’t get.
But then he’s also able to target under the radar project guys, even say a DL that switches over to TE to help with depth. And then he coaches them into studs.
It’s reminiscent of Utah body type recruiting and development. But is it on purpose, or is it necessity. Is he a shit recruiter and lazy? Is he a body type and develop guy. Abundance?
For such a track record of good players at his position, he also has a track record of suck. Thus, no resolution to my feelings. shrug
All the good TEs he actually recruited were local. He wasn’t going to offer Drew Sample until Pete got here. He’d been chasing Chase Blakely instead. He’s never pulled in a top level TE from California as a Husky TE coach and that’s with Pete as his closer. He’s a good developer of talent but he can’t sell that skill to recruits outside of the state of Washington to save his life.
I’m legitimately having a hard time remembering if he was actually a bad recruiter or if I was just so caught up in the TBS/TSIO nonsense that I believed he was a bad recruiter.
I've heard Arizona guys say he was a great recruiter in the region. Maybe he was recruiting guys other than TEs too? I know nothing. Never have, never will.

DOOMED
Might depend on the quality of players in the portal.
Just looking at On3 rankings alone, the best available WR is 234th overall. Best IOL is actualy Paki Finau at 139. Best OT is 380.
Not sure what the spring portal will show, but it'll probably be better than what's available in the portal now
I don't know that it means much so far, other than all the olineman were tied to Huff.
But I do already hate Paopao again for bringing 2 guys for visits and both immediately running back to Tucson.
yeah, that’s a really good point about pow pow back to his bullshit.

I forgot about that.

Dissly played DL at UW for 2 years before transitioning to TE. He played in 6 games as a true freshman and started a few games as a sophomore.
He switched because we didn't have any WTE who could block in 2016.

He was a fucking terrible recruiter. Pretty solid coach tho.
pow pow sucks. There's a reason he went to unlv after "developing" all that talent.
This is something the TSIO guys got right actually. This area produces a bounty of 6’5, 230 Norse TE types and therefore we’re teed up for success.

He got a promotion on the corporate ladder of coaches. He needs to perform at a higher level, otherwise…
