Your Guide to Houston That Doesn’t Suck

It’s a hotel, and you’ll have a bed. But everything East of town toward Channelview and Baytown is a shitty meth den. When I started out in criminal defense every other call was from a meth head in Baytown wanting to pay their $10,000 fee through $100 increments on cash app.ExtraChrisB said:Should I cancel my reservation at the Holiday Inn in Houston East? You won’t get killed or anything. Just not where the regular Houstonians stay or go.

I echo the AirBNB sentiment. For instance you can book this house near my neighborhood for like $200/night and it’s a $20 Uber to downtown where you can take the Metro to the stadium. I actually booked this one for my parents a couple months ago.EsophagealFeces said:
Airbnb seems to be the way to go, especially if you have other people you’re staying with. My buddies and I are going to be paying $50 a night apiece for a nice place, and we’ll all have our own bedsExtraChrisB said:Should I cancel my reservation at the Holiday Inn in Houston East? Lots more like it. Neighborhoods like Oak Forest, West U, the Heights, Rice Military, Rice Village have lots of options. I just bring up Oak Forest because it’s safe and I can tell you how much it costs to Uber (it’s a 12 minute drive from my house to my downtown office; 30 or so to Reliant depending on traffic).

I’ve used Turo quite a bit. Love it for Hawaii especially because you don’t look a dumbass tourist driving a Jeep or convertible Mustang.Postal91 said:
I just had someone push Turo to me. The AirBnB of car rentals. Looks like you just rent people's personal fleet cars and away you go. Intrigued by this, especially in avoiding lines.Purple_Pills said:Postal91 said:
Is Costco the way to go with rentals?? Never checked there. May grab oneEsophagealFeces said:Is renting a car a necessity? My buddies are planning on ubering everywhere, but that seems like it would get stupid expensive in a huge area like Houston. I can rent a full size car through Costco for like $250 for the 4 days I’ll be there. Seems like a no brainer
YES! No cancellation until day of rental plus they have awesome customer service if you get screwed (*cough* Avis, Budget) by not renting through Enterprise/National/Alamo, which you can through Costco, though may be slightly more expensive than the less reliable rental companies. -
Just looked up the location of our Airbnb. I’m on Westheimer a block away from Taft St.

You're right in the middle of Montrose. I won't comment on what that means for your chances of being raped.CFetters_Nacho_Lover said:Just looked up the location of our Airbnb. I’m on Westheimer a block away from Taft St.
Lots of food and drink in walking distance. My wife likes Traveler's Table, a restaurant a block or so from you.

$200/night split 4 ways = $50 apiece.rivercitybridie said:$50 on AirBnB for multiple rooms in nice place?
My AirBnB experience has been most places are comparable in cost to 3.5-4 star downtown hotels
I must be doing something wrong.
I noticed enormous gap in Houston prices for 4 star and 2 star hotels. In vancouver, canada, the 2-star prices go crazy many times in the summer and shoulder season
The gap in Houston seems to be $60 to $1200 (even higher)... Here if top hotels were $1200, 2 star, descent location would $225 so. Vegas is similar to around here. Get strip hotel comically cheap ($15 plus fees... Becomes $170 to $200 plus fees many weekend nights) -

Good chance the closest legit one near you (at least that I’m aware of) is in Centerville north of Houston on I45EsophagealFeces said:

Not terribly sure what’s East or West but you won’t get a full experience going South
Pro tip … if you go up to the one in Centerville then make sure you also stop at Woody’s Smokehouse … while I’m sure the meat/jerky is the main draw I’d call out the spice rubs that they’ve got … they are super strong and a place I frequent often -
there is one just west of town in KatyTequilla said:

Katy one has one of the longest car washes in the world if I’m not mistaken…most of the Buc-ees have decent breakfast tacos if you are looking for a quick bite.WilburHooksHands said:

Buc-ees started in Lake Jackson area which is why all the ones South of Houston are older and more standard gas stations. -
Fuck, Houston sounds fucking retarded.
And this is coming from someone that still takes pleasure in spending time in fucking Portland. -
In the last 3years bucees expanded bigtime. They are still outside of metro centers, but are more frequent now.
Katy and Fairfield are probably the most accessible -
I’m glad we have so many Houston superiority guysm on this bored. Thanks for the info, fellas

Been using this thread like it's the only information about Houston on the internetEsophagealFeces said:I’m glad we have so many Houston superiority guysm on this bored. Thanks for the info, fellas

So locals, the forecast looks like ass for Monday. Assuming a closed roof at the stadium; outdoor activities will be a no-go and I assume I'll get soaked with any type of walking into the stadium.
I'll be keeping a close eye on the forecast since I am a 10:40am flight arrival that day but generally speaking does IAH just get screwed by T-storms, or is it usually a temporary ground stop with a few diversions that get cleared up quickly or a cluster fuck beyond cluster fucks? I don't want to get fucked with a multi-hour delay due to T-storms but don't really have the schedule open to get there the night before.
Also I assume with such weather that traffic will be a disaster? -
Traffic is a disaster whether the weather sucks or not. IAH is pretty reliable. It storms often in Houston. I can count the number of times I've been delayed by storms one on hand and I travel a lot.whlinder said:So locals, the forecast looks like ass for Monday. Outside of hurricanes and shit, Houston storms tend to dump a shit load of rain quickly and move on. Not a place where rain just sits all day (with a couple notable exceptions). NRG roof would be closed rain or shine. It's never really open.

I like this @Sobchak_Security fellow. He seems like a promising prospect.

I see low temps in the 40 Monday night which means cold front coming in. Tuesday is cold by Houston standards. Cold front blowing in might keep the humidity away. Normal Houston without a cold front you'll be in a bowl of soup for several hours after a rainstorm.Tequilla said:
