He missed a play during the ASU game last yearWoolleyDoog said:
I'd be shocked if he's not hurt in some capacity at least. If he goes two full seasons at UW without ever missing a single play due to injury that's a win.TheRoarOfTheCrowd said:The guy is hurt and has been playing through it... last year and the first games of 2023 he was throwing dimes with absolute accuracy at a rate of 78% [first 6 games this year, don't know the number for last year] and now he is throwing even short passes with an adventure to be hauled in by the receivers. So he is HURT and has been playing through it. Yes he ahs still made some big plays, but his accuracy is obviously not the same and its not in his head, its his body which is undoubtedly affecting his headspace as well, but it the body he has been struggling with. Could not be more clear ~ at least that is my take.

I think Penix & Co have a game left in them.bisonduck said:
That was some weird shit. He looked like he left in a body bag. The double entendre was palpable. That offense has no gas in the tank.Kaepsknee said:
That might explain his crying in a supply box.jecornel said:I have zero insight on this but I’m wondering if Mike is so banged up they are limiting practice reps to the bare minimum. The offense is so out of sync it could be a real possibility.
If Grubb doesn’t design a game plan to make his life easier on Friday there will be seppuku on the forum. -
Let’s hope so. I’m not hitchhiking to Vegas for nothing.jecornel said:I think Penix & Co have a game left in them.

What exactly is hurt? And why, if he's hurt, are we continuing to keep the high-difficulty playbook intact while he also runs more than he has since he was at Indiana?TheRoarOfTheCrowd said:The guy is hurt and has been playing through it... last year and the first games of 2023 he was throwing dimes with absolute accuracy at a rate of 78% [first 6 games this year, don't know the number for last year] and now he is throwing even short passes with an adventure to be hauled in by the receivers. His accuracy really hasn't been the same since USC, the Apple Cup was just the culmination of it with no weather related excuses to mask itAtomicDawg said:
He had started using his legs and they had even called qb runs in the red zone the last two games prior to wazzu. He didn't scramble much if at all on Saturday. The most puzzling thing was his inaccuracy as it really hasn't been an issue for two years and then it was horrible for the apple cup. Could be injury related but who knows.GreenRiverGatorz said:If he looked even remotely hurt in any of the last five games I might believe it. But he's looking physically fine - no limping (he's actually initiating contact more than ever before), his throwing mechanics look normal, and his arm strength is 100% there.
I think this is 100% on Grubb. I'm not smart enough to know the finer details here, but Penix looks like he's being asked to make elite throws with a consistency that not even NFL starters regularly achieve. And this is snowballing into frustration and the elite throws are devolving into huge whiffs. Grubb needs to give his QB some easy buckets to get back on track. And apparently he needs to do this in five days. -
So, we all assume 2016 Brownsox got dinged up against Cal (I think?) and never put up the same passing splits. Which from a numbers perspective is true, he had a clear delineation from elite numbers back to just good.
Penix seems to have had the same occur with his splits before and after Oregon.
Brownsox never got right of course, even with a month off before the Peach Bowl. -
I believe his ribs are the problem. It’s playing through pain. Thus creating inconsistent accuracy.GreenRiverGatorz said:

The point Gatorz made is a good one. If his ribs are hurt, why doesn’t the game plan reflect it?
-
Does anyone remember fall camp and Penix taking a week off from practice because of “arm fatigue”? Maybe his arm just isn’t right and they are sitting him at practice in hopes that it will liven up for game days. The receivers are running the routes to where Morris or Mack are throwing them and Mikes throwing them where he thinks they should be. Timing is all off. Just a guess.TheHB said:The point Gatorz made is a good one. If his ribs are hurt, why doesn’t the game plan reflect it?

I remember this happening right in front of me and my dad and I groaning that we sure were glad our Heisman candidate QB may have just destroyed his shoulder for an extra yard for a TD in a game they know they will win by at least 20.GrundleStiltzkin said:

It has to be rep related. There is no way you become this out of sync after playing this much ball together. His reps have to be limited during the week.
If we believe this coaching staff plays four D chess we are going to see a different scheme this week.
We will be getting Jackson back and I firmly believe we will get more Bernard play on Friday.
Huff is going to challenge the shit out of the line this week.theknowledge said:

I hadn't look at that since it happened. He takes a hit on his throwing shoulder hard enough to spin a full 180.WoolleyDoog said:

it’s possible he was concussed or close to it when he was sticking his head in the dark. he plays the biggest in the big moments so let’s see what happens

I don't think he's hurt or broken. I think he was just completely relieved that the game was over and they survived to finish the conference season unbeaten. I was freaking the fuck out myself and just didn't have anyone here to throw a cape on me and walk me out of the living room. I'll be honest - I could have used that. I don't even want to think how I would have melted down had they lost that game - so I figure Mike was probably feeling something similar.
I've seen this shit before. Great Husky teams struggling with an over-matched Coog squad that decides not to suck for one game in November and step up their woeful game in an effort to sock big brother in the mouth. It really looked like it was going to happen again and I was going over the coping mechanisms I was going to employ to get over it in my head.
When the kick sailed through, I had to stand there for a minute to make sure it was real.
So I got it when Mike just walked out of there to take a minute to think about what just happened. I trust he'll have himself squared away by the time we face off against the ducks in the biggest game of the season. I'm not sure I can even handle watching the fucking game the way these guys have been squeaking them out. Apparently, they're built for this.

Explains why offense went downhill when the fall quarter started -
Hard to be a consistent offense when your go to plays are the highest degree of difficulty throws.
Back-shoulder fades, slot fades, cross field outs. Most NFL QBs wouldn't be asked to make these at the rate we call them. And I think it's partly Mike's fault too, it's what he feels comfortable checking into when they don't feel comfortable running the ball.
It's just not sustainable every game. Gameplan better. -
Must work on making the throws easier and letting the wr’s make plays.Neighbor2972 said:

Watch out because average depth of target might get criticized.jecornel said:Must work on making the throws easier and letting the wr’s make plays.

You can’t make all the people happy all the tim. -
I don’t think they adjust at all. Grubb and co will push down field matter the defensive look. It’s just what they do.
-
Yeah, this idea that they are going to come out with a different gameplan than the one that has gone 12-0 is all kinds of fucking stupid. And if they did change it up and lost, Deboer would be getting the Cristobal treatment (rightfully so) in the media.

Too bad @brents isn't here to see all this coaching from behind a computer screen
UW has the entire nation dazed and confused
DeBoer ran psyops in Gulf War 1. Little known fact -

I'm going to assume that their game plan is a little more involved than "well we're 12-0, roll the same shit out". They scored 22 and 24 points against two mediocre secondaries, and you know that is driving them up a fucking wall. I'm pretty confident that our 23-2 coaching staff knows how to review game film, pinpoint what didn't work (which we here have pointed out ad nauseum), and put changes in place to fix that shit. If they didn't they wouldn't be 23-2.Seven_Eleven said:Yeah, this idea that they are going to come out with a different gameplan than the one that has gone 12-0 is all kinds of fucking stupid. Guys, some of it is Penix refusing check downs. He likes the big shot as much as Grubb.
They are like two addicts huddled in an alley, chasing that hit.
