I used to argue against them before WE even had them.
We played the entire conference and the winner won.
I suspect it’s one more test for the top teams if you want to look at it that way.
BUT let’s make up a fake season.
Let’s say after this weekend Utah is ranked 11th and in third place. In this made up season UO and UW are ranked 8th and 9th, why should 8 and 9 play their way out of the playoff while Utah sits at home safe playing one fewer game and not in their own CCG?
That’s the REAL goddamned issue. -

If there were a 12 team playoff this year, UW might need to beat Oregon 3 times to win the whole thing. That's stupid.

I know it is silly though. Take your two best teams since there are no longer divisions and let them knock one of them down and possibly lose a chance to host a playoff games or get in.

Nobody gives a flying fuck about conference championships.
The playoff is gonna be 24 teams by 2026. Perennial also rans need to have hope when they go 9-3 or 8-4 to keep fan bases checked in.
Let the team that wins a "conference championship" get one of the eight first-round byes as their reward -
It replicates a Round of 16 game in the playoffs going forward.
Win it, and you get a bye into the round of 8. Lose it, and you have to play again (round of 12) unless you suck and aren't in the playoff mix.
It's going to be better to finish 3rd than 2nd in conference going forward, until the rules for byes change anyway. I can't imagine in a future world where 1 of the top 9 ranked teams is not in the SEC/B1G (as today's rankings are) that those byes will continue being handed out to 4 conference champions. As of today that would be Arizona winning the Big 12 and getting a bye. -
The winner of the regular season is the winner of the conference. Period.
Just like in English Premier League soccer.
