    It replicates a Round of 16 game in the playoffs going forward.

    Win it, and you get a bye into the round of 8. Lose it, and you have to play again (round of 12) unless you suck and aren't in the playoff mix.

    It's going to be better to finish 3rd than 2nd in conference going forward, until the rules for byes change anyway. I can't imagine in a future world where 1 of the top 9 ranked teams is not in the SEC/B1G (as today's rankings are) that those byes will continue being handed out to 4 conference champions. As of today that would be Arizona winning the Big 12 and getting a bye.
