Jen Cohen's repeated emphasis on UW's "commitment to sustainability"

How about a halftime marching band tribute to fossil fuels?
Normally I'd take this to the Tug Tavern. But its pertinent here on the main board.

I mean they can recycle the stadium drinking water from the 300 level troughs for all I care. Just win baby
The irony of the extended flights is palpable though I'll give you that -
Sounds like there's just that much more carbon to offset...

I think you're missing the point a bit. It's not about the actions that are taken to sustain the environment, be they valid or not. It's the athletic department's constant virtue signaling and bragging about how they're saving the environment that is the hypocrisy.Canadawg said:I mean they can recycle the stadium drinking water from the 300 level troughs for all I care. They’re no longer offering cups. You have to hold your hand open for a pour and shots are given Mazatlan style. Finger food only. No waste. No flyers. No handouts. Tailgating is permitted 30 minutes before kickoff and all must leave immediately. It’s wasteful otherwise.

Agree that trying to market anything sustainable after the B1G news looks ridiculous.DerekJohnson said:

Hopefully the athletic department keeps trying to be as "sustainable" as possible to offset some of the upcoming increased travel.
I'd be curious how much "sustainability" plays into the buying decisions of students etc. Are they not going to attend football games repeatedly if there is not a strong attempt at reducing waste, environmental efficiency, etc? -
Affluence drives consumption of all things including dead dinosaurs. Bigger homes, more first class tickets to Bora Bora, etc, etc.DerekJohnson said:

The most sustainable athletic department is no athletic department.
UW needs to fire up its nuclear reactor again. Just keep @PurpleBaze out of the building.

Weird thing to be upset about. Like @CFetters_Nacho_Lover said, you either have an AD or you don't. In the current environment, it was increase carbon footprint or die, so UW chose to not die. Same as Ghana completely deforesting their country for charcoal when gas prices tripled and they couldn't afford it. Easy to be shortsighted when it's that or starve. Doesn't make the deforestation good.
Reducing energy consumption is a good thing regardless of charter jet fuel consumption that keeps the show going. Even if you're the rolling coal type, it saves the AD money in the long run, and that's good no matter how many hours per day you spend in the Tug.
If you're going to do it anyway, might as well brag about it when your school is located in a place like Seattle.
TL;DR: Who cares? -
Who said I was upset? I identified an hypocrisy and commented on it. Like Canadawg, you're missing the point here, or else reacting reflexively based on ideology.1to392831weretaken said:Weird thing to be upset about. More cheap energy is a GOOD thing
It's so first world to worry about it

Virtue signaling?! They ditched paper tickets. What more would you have of them.
Seriously I'm all for sustainability when one can actually identify reasonable opportunities. WTF can a football team or athletic program do to be environmentally sustainable in any meaningful way? Are they going to eliminate single use plastics? Make people bring their own refillable drinking vessels? Only play day games (no lights) and eliminate sideline coolers for the players?
I don't see it. It's a faggy buzz word meant to placate people who feed on buzz words and catch phrases and don't watch football anyways. As a tree hugging libtard (nevermind I'm the only non logger in my family and have never had strained relationships over it) I cringe when the AD uses words like that.

They probably have banned straws and are using biodegradable sporks. That's about the extent of what they can do short of switching their football schedule to an SEC format where they don't leave the PNW for any road games.chuck said:Virtue signaling?! I’m #TeamAbundance on this one. You can call out the hypocrisy AND praise the AD for doing what they can to help the environment that’s under their control.
The smugness is grating, I’ll grant you, but honestly that sweet, sweet FREE VIRTUE PUB! is one of the few things that drives organizations to do the right thing.

The point is that people that don't like the position aren't going to have a negative effect on the athletics program. "That's stupid to worry about sustainability they fly jets!...Anyways who's Centre this year??"
On the flip side people who do care about the subject can feel good about themselves and will keep their head high knowing they are saving the planet while they watch football. A two fer!
No one is changing the channel because Jen is broadcasting a green initiative...unless @DerekJohnson wants to be a pioneer? -

You didn't identify a hypocrisy, you just wanted to. Unless your philosophy is that you either live in a cave eating berries or you're a hypocrite, but I doubt that's the case. You're letting perfect be the enemy of good. It's objectively a good thing to be efficient. Making a dirty and expensive thing (in this case having an athletics program, I guess) less dirty and more efficient is good. It saves money. It uses less resources. This is no different than a car company bragging that their half-ton pickup gets 2 more mpg than the competition. Why wouldn't they? It saves the customer money, is a selling point, and makes some small percentage of them feel better about buying them. That pickup truck still guzzles gas, but it guzzles less gas, and a Honda Civic isn't towing your boat.DerekJohnson said:

"Reacting reflexively based on ideology" is starting a forum thread complaining about something that saves the program you love money and has literally zero impact on your life. I'm in the "IDGAF" camp; you're the one starting a thread in which the first two words are "enough already." Which would suggest to a reasonable person that you're at least a little upset... -
But why isn't the AD also the DEI leader of the conference??? @FireCohen yesterday
