The dirty little secret is that most white, upper income, progressives know that the way to succeed academically is to study and do the work. They don't let their kids watch six hours of TV or spend all day playing video games. But they don't think black and brown parents have the same capacity that they do. They don't see them as equal and they don't hold them to the same standards they hold themselves and their kids to. I will never forget going to parents night at my daughter's school to meet her 2nd grade teacher. in a class of 25 or so- only two parents didn't make it. Just a couple of years earlier, the teacher had been able to move from her public school job to teach at our Catholic school (taking a $10K paycut). She told us her previous public school had the reverse turnout where only a couple of parents bothered to show up. She had parents who tried to bully her, one kid threw a shoe at her, etc. Good Old Atlanta Public schools.

The local Catholic elementary school Lady of the Lake in Lake Oswego has a $12,000 tuition compared to the $16 grand that the West Linn school district pays. St. Clare Catholic school in Portland is $9,800. Like everything else, the private sector can do it better with less money.

Pretty sure we were Sub $10K for grade school. High School was more like $14K (plus a good lean on a donation). We lived in one of the best School districts in Georgia but the first day we went to sign her up for kindergarten we were told there were spaces but we needed to go into the lottery. Meaning we would still get our City of Decatur School, but maybe not the one literally down the street.
This seemed odd to me- there are spaces but we need to go into a lottery? The lottery wouldn't be held until the following month. I asked the Asst Superintendent- So someone could move in from another state and have the same chance as our daughter even though we had lived in and paid city of Decatur taxes for 10 years? A very hesitant "yes" was the answer. We started interviewing Catholic schools the next week. Best decision ever. Irony alert- Private school was much more integrated than our local kindergarten/grade school. -
I agree that the policies of the Federal government have done serious damage to black families but nobody was ever forced to take the handout. Getting on the public teat was a choice. Let's see getting paid per kid makes the choice a lot easier. As you have said, a smoker gets more heavily criticized than having kids out of wedlock that you can't afford to take care of.SFGbob said:
