A San Francisco school board member apologized Tuesday after she made a racist statement, saying one of the biggest challenges in educating Black and brown students was their “unstable family environments” and “lack of parental encouragement to focus on learning.”
“From my very limited exposure in the past four months to the challenges of educating marginalized students especially in the black and brown community, I see one of the biggest challenges as being the lack of family support for those students. Unstable family environments caused by housing and food insecurity along with lack of parental encouragement to focus on learning cause children to not be able to focus on or value learning,” Hsu responded in part to the question. “That makes teachers’ work harder because they have to take care of emotional and behavioral issues of students before they can teach them. That is not fair to the teachers.”

Then the question I have is this: Are you honestly concerned with your kid's education and learning if you're completely unwilling to listen to anything that might be critical of your parenting skills? The answer is obvious. The dirty little secret is that most white, upper income, progressives know that the way to succeed academically is to study and do the work. They don't let their kids watch six hours of TV or spend all day playing video games. But they don't think black and brown parents have the same capacity that they do. They don't see them as equal and they don't hold them to the same standards they hold themselves and their kids to. Yeah, something tells me that people who are paying $45K a year to send their little Tanners and Ainsleys to Harvard Westlake aren't too keen on allowing the classrooms their kids sit in to become disruptive shitholes where no learning or education is possible.
