Oklahoma QB Caleb Williams entering transfer portal, leaves door open for return to Sooners

After weeks of rumors and speculation, Oklahoma quarterback Caleb Williams will enter the transfer portal, he announced Monday via Twitter. In his statement, Williams said that in light of the "recent changes" around the program, he was entering the portal in order to speak with other schools, but that remaining at Oklahoma "definitely will be an option."

Williams took over as the Sooners' starter midseason following a breakout performance off the bench in Oklahoma's come-from-behind win against rival Texas on Oct. 9. Williams led the Sooners to a 5-2 record as starter including a victory against Oregon in the Alamo Bowl.

Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione and new head coach Brent Venables released a statement shortly after the news broke supporting Williams' decision and keeping the door open for his return.

"While we believe OU provides Caleb the best opportunity to develop as a player and realize his goals for college and beyond, we respect his right to explore his options following the staffing changes here," the statement read.

The Sooners hired Venables on Dec. 5 after Lincoln Riley left to coach at USC.
