Not noted is that the OC during those periods was Babushka who also is having a very strong rate of success in the running game at Oregon StBoth are likely factors
How does a coach get called a shit recruiter when his unit is high-performing?
It is possible to be a good coach and recruiter.
A strong argument can be made that Huff's recruiting the last 2 years has been just as bad as Strausser's ever was. Obviously there are lots of factors (players, scheme, etc) but the way our line worked as a team under Strausser was a thing of beauty. Under Huff, it has been putrid. With the next o line coach, it might be a good idea to look into hiring a surly old fuck who might not relate as well to the kids but earns their respect by knowing his shit (see Michalczyk at OSU)
You have to do both. For a great coach/developer a large percentage of Strausser’s diamond in the rough signees never came close to doing shit. Sosebee, James, Turner, remember these names? It became abundantly clear in 2016 and 2017 as our Plan A-D guys signed elsewhere that another Adams or McGary wasn’t walking through that door.To say otherwise is revisionist history. The Nfl is a better fit for him.
It is possible to be a good coach and recruiter. That’s a great question. If you’re a HC, do you want the steak of having a great positional coach or the sizzle of a 50-year old man who doesn’t mind texting 17-year old boys at 10pm?

Personally, I don't care what the coordinators do with regards to recruiting as much as a positional coach but offensive line is a very important position. Strausser just didn't want to do it and we didn't get enough talent without the effort. All that being said, Huff sucks.

McGary - recruited as a DE by Kwat anyways, so Strausser gets zero credit for the recruitment here. But development was all him. Matt James - lol Jesse Sosebee - also lol John Turner - who? Devin Burleson - useless Jared Hilbers - give Strauss credit, a nobody recruit who developed into an above average starter Henry Roberts - not sure Strauss even ran point on this, but it was a good signing. He of course ended up busting. Trey Adams - Obviously a big dick get. Give Strauss credit. Luke Wattenberg - Solid signing, but has turned out to be useless. Maybe Strausser could have developed him into something better. Nick Harris - Not a big signing, but clearly Strausser's best success. Henry Bainivalu - See Wattenberg. Cole Norgaard - who? Jaxson Kirkland - Maybe Strauss gets credit for evaluating him? Losing Sarrell was obviously a blessing in disguise on this one. So I'd still take him over Huff given the clear regression we've seen from players who have much more raw talent than what Strauss had to work with. OL more than anything is a position where development far outweighs recruiting in terms of eventual success. That said, just find someone who can do both.
IMHO Henry Bainivalu has been coming along. But yeah, the only coach worth keeping on the offensive side of the ball is Adams (maybe Caho). Keith B's results unfortunately haven't been very good since Gaskin and Ahmed left for the NFL.
