The Saints reached the bye week with a 3-2 record, playing some inconsistent football along the way. But New Orleans could be rewarded as early as this week for surviving the opening portion of its schedule. Michael Thomas and Tre’Quan Smith are close to returning, as are Marcus Davenport and Kwon Alexander on the opposite side of the ball. Davenport and Alexander will be excellent additions when the time comes, but the Saints have managed to be a top-five scoring defense in their absence. As for the offense, Alvin Kamara and Jameis Winston lead a group that’s scored the 10th-most points per game and could even rise when Thomas and Smith join the mix. New Orleans is just 1-2 against the spread as the favorite this year but opened -4.5 against the Seahawks.

Yes, Russell Wilson is a star. And yes, he is essential to Seattle’s success. However, panicking about Geno Smith after one start is an unwarranted overreaction. Smith’s first start since 2017 wasn’t pretty, passing for 209 yards and a touchdown. But look at it like this: He didn’t throw an interception. He held his ground in the pocket despite taking five sacks. And he gave his team a chance to win. That, a respectable 101 rushing yards from Alex Collins and the defense allowing under 350 yards should provide some hope that Seattle can remain afloat until Wilson returns.
