You do have to set the tone and be positive. Never missed a deadline and everyone down the line knew that it simply wasn't an option. You give people room to fail and they will. You tell them succeed or get fired
Things have changed since the 80's. Kids today want to be coddled which is why I'm in the booth not on the sidelines anymore
