If the chemist in breaking bad is so amazing, why do they have to buy psuedophed (or steal the main ingredient), couldn't a stud chemist just make it?

What's the deal with airline food? -
Isnt that like a major plot line in season two?

As long as we are on the subject of TV shows, I will add that I highly recommend Drunk History.

If I recall, that is when they switch from buying the boxes of psudafed (or having helpers do that), to stealing a barrel of the main ingredient. But the question remains... if that guy is such a bad ass chemist, why can't he synthesize it... why do they have to risk stealing a barrel of it at night from a guarded warehouse?doogsinparadise said:Isnt that like a major plot line in season two?

It's actually an entirely different precursor. The basic (easy) way to make meth is using pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) and red phosphorus, which has lousy yields and low purity.
In season 2 (SPOILERS Y'ALL) they steal a barrel of methylamine and use a different synth to yield the desired drug - which is the notorious "blue" meth.

The WaPo article covers that. It's better TV the way they do it.
