If they don't get back into recruiting at at worst a top 25 level by next year then it's going to fall apart very quickly. I think Lake's a good coach but he's not good enough to make the kids of classes he's bringing in world beaters.

Seems like he's getting called out on recruiting by his peers as well

Open Portal recruiting in the age of NIL is just getting started. LIPO

Washington
"This is a good team with a lot of questions. They barely played last year and didn’t practice much. They had something closer to an extended spring than a real season."
"The constant is the defense, obviously, nothing that they did last year with Jimmy [Lake] as head coach changed what he was doing as defensive coordinator under Pete [Chris Petersen]. It’s the exact same schemes and he’s bonafide, he can find and make NFL talent on that side of the ball. That’s going to be their signature on the field, although for Jimmy it’s more about an off-field team branding thing, bringing back swagger and being more aggressive in recruiting."
"Offense is what we’re watching. They’ve committed to running the ball, obviously they’ve had a string of good backs, their tight ends stand out too. It will be a really interesting quarterback battle in the offseason, I’d watch out for the freshman [Sam Huard]."
"John [Donovan] is the kind of OC who is really agnostic about a scheme, he’s going to try to fit to personnel and what’s available."
"Lake has talked a lot about what they won’t be, let’s find out what they are."
"The smartest move they can make is building a team that wins the North consistently, and to do that they’ve got to be as good as Oregon on the lines. The problem is that you can’t really do that with any consistency if you’re relying on the transfer portal, and it looks like he’s embraced that because they haven’t recruited as well as they probably should.” -

Ummm is this a different John Donovan than the one in Montlake? I know this anonymous coach feedback stuff is mostly bullshit, but this was like asking a politician a question that they have zero knowledge in and you get a canned answer.
Also, hat tip to whichever old fuck coach used the phrase "dial up exotic blitzes" as an excuse for "can't stay in base personnel because we suck and have to bring the house since we can't get pressure on the QB" about Todd Orlando. -
tldr: they think Lake is mediocre.

To be fair, Wazzu has never recruited in the top 10 but they have put together some strong teams… just sayin… it’s going to take more than recruiting top talent. He needs coaches

Theoretically Donovan is able to completely change the scheme from week to week. Look at the difference from Oregon State to Arizona, we went from run the damn ball to throwing the ball all over the place.LB_33 said:"John [Donovan] is the kind of OC who is really agnostic about a scheme, he’s going to try to fit to personnel and what’s available."

We definitely weren't married to a specific scheme last year. The problem is you still have to know when to use which scheme, and be able to execute it.
