The barriers were built to keep citizens of Eastern European Communist utopias from fleeing in mass to the West, not to keep the Western Europeans citizens from breaking into the communist countries.
Those who tried to escape from Eastern Europe were shot on sight by border guards.

Mark Steyn left Canada to come here. As did lots of Canadian musicians and actors. More freedom, more opportunity in a bigger market. But they were not fleeing. Lots of Brits are here for the same reason. More freedom and opportunity than in the UK. Lots of Indians are here. Wouldn't call India a capitalist country but they weren't fleeing. On the whole, they are respectful to their new country and some are outright patriots. Now lots of Mexicans that did flee corrupt and socialist Mexico and many hate this country. Check out the recent US-Mexico soccer match. Same with lots of Muslim refugees. Look at how grateful Ilhan Omar is.
