Penei Sewell is headed to the Motor City.

The former Oregon left tackle was selected by the Detroit Lions with the No. 7 overall pick of the NFL Draft Thursday night.

His four-year contract, with a fifth-year club option, is projected to be worth $24,099,130 with a $14,886,640 signing bonus, according to OverTheCap.com.

The first Oregon player selected in this year’s draft and the highest a Duck has been selected since Justin Herbert went No. 6 last year, Sewell is the third Oregon offensive lineman drafted in the first round of the common draft era (1967), joining Tom Drougas (1970) and Kyle Long (2013). He’s the 19th Duck in program history to be drafted in the first round of the NFL draft all-time and 34th UO offensive lineman drafted all-time.

The first sophomore offensive lineman and first Duck to ever win the Outland Trophy, Sewell was a unanimous All-American. Sewell led the Ducks with 58 knockdowns that season and led the nation with a run-blocking grade of 95.3 from Pro Football Focus and was third with a pass-blocking grade of 91.1. His career run-blocking grade of 94.8 from PFF was highest in this year’s draft class.

As a freshman in 2018, Sewell was the first Oregon true freshman offensive lineman to start in the season opener since 1997.-James Crepea The Oregonian
