If Hop stays, couple big men in the transfer portal they could look at.

Robinson is a former 4-star recruit (86 overall by ESPN) from Gilbert, Arizona. After reclassifying to join Ole Miss a year early, he redshirted and only got into 6 games as a redshirt freshman. From the look of things, he's a heck of an athlete and plus shot blocker. He's far and away the tallest PF/C in the transfer portal and would be a welcome sight for the zone. Not sure what he's got for skills on the block, but he seems like a skilled enough athlete to display some aptitude there. Seems as though he hit the weight room at Ole Miss because he was pretty slight in high school... seeing as a he's a West Coast kid, I'm hopeful the Dawgs have been in contact.

Jaylen Butz 6'9 PF Depaul
Averaged 10 and 5 for Depaul as a junior. One of the lone kids on the transfer list who shows some ability to play on the block. High field-goal % guy, nearly 60% which was good for 3rd in the Big East. Bruiser who could help add some toughness and muscle inside for the Dawgs.

What makes you think big guys would come to Hop for development?
These guys want PT and a chance to go to the next level.
If you're a big, the first place you're going is Gonzaga.
Hell, not even sure UW would be third in the State of Washington after watching the two bigs at WSU develop this year.

So I’m not really sure recruits buy your narrative... and It’s not like I’m presenting these transfers as NBA-level ability talent... they’re solid, not special, but better than what we have. -
Jackson Grant? The one signee out of 31 offers over two cycles? That Jackson Grant? Yes, that really proves that recruit(s) are buying what Hop is selling.BroadcastingDawg said:

No... the narrative that big men are going to Gonzaga first and then are considering WSU before UW.FremontTroll said:

They graduated only Green and Wright this year which leaves a spot for Grant and a transfer.
Only 2 teams in the PAC 12 have commits for 2022.
The Dawgs will graduate Bey, Stevenson, Pryor, Brooks next year leaving 4 spots open for 2022. Expect a larger signing class next year.

Gonzaga is one of the finalists for the Gatorade National Player of the Year in 7'1" Chet Holgren.
You realize why Gonzaga might be a little higher interest for bigs than UW?
And Jackson and Abogidi are so far ahead of Grant, it's not even close.

And Chet Holmgren has a ton of talent, but he's also a twig. I'll be surprised if he gets much playing time w. the Bulldogs until he puts on a good 30 lbs. -

About the only thing we have to offer right now is playing time.
Unfortunately there are other more high profile programs that can offer this as well. Add to the fact that our coach is a lame duck one and I dont think we will land the necessary recruits to get back on track.
Hop is gone next year but should be gone now.
I hope I'm wrong. -
Washington has at least a little bit of a name... there's lots of current players in the NBA and they've had some decent success as a program over the last couple decades.Prestonluv said:About the only thing we have to offer right now is playing time.

I have no idea if these transfers have any interest in UW... but I know we can't roll into next year w. Sorn and Roberts... any transfer PF with some decent ability should know that if they come here they'll get minutes and play for a Power Conference school w. some pedigree. And that's why most players transfer, they're seeking a little more attention or an increase in minutes. -

It will always be a "what if?" Quade hadn't bombed in the classroom and if Jaden wasn't such a mental midget. Def set the program back and wasn't good optics... also graduating 2 1-and-done players to the NBA and not having success with them stunted the growth a couple guys who sat and set recruiting back. -

Very much a rookie AD move. And like I said, a function of her thinking she doesn’t make mistakes.
That resulted in a first time head coach getting an insane buyout, one not justified by on the court accomplishments or threat of him leaving, that effectively makes it impossible to fire him after he tanks the program. Great work. -

What I said was Holmgren isn't likely to play a ton of minutes for Gonzaga until he adds a lot of weight. The kid is one bad landing away from breaking a leg every time he jumps.

You don't think there was a decision process the kid went through and Hop wasn't a part of landing him? I don't care if he bleeds Purple and Gold... you still gotta convince the kid to come and play basketball for you.

A $12M+ buyout for mike Hopkins? That is BONKERS. Dude had won one (1) tournament game in his career. Her job is to negotiate contracts, and she got hosed. Which means she’s effectively not even in control of the bball program anymore - she couldn’t fire hop even if she wanted to. Great job, Jen!
As for grant, yes, you could have Amazon Alexa coaching the program & he would commit. He loves UW and has been a UW fan his entire life. -
He was the P12 Coach of the year 2x years in a row... won the conference in his 2nd season largely w. a team of misfits who made up a team that went 9-22 w. Markelle f'n Fultz on it a season before he got there. He lost to the eventual National Champions in the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament... You're underselling what he did in those 1st 2 years to deserve an nice extension w. guarantees. Things can go poorly quickly, but if the last 2 Dawg years had gone great not a single soul would be talking about them... it's part of the risks you take with contracts... and I'm not convinced his buyouts are why he's not being fired, they were going to give him a chance to turn this around regardless.doogville said:

These guys want PT and a chance to go to the next level.
If you're a big, the first place you're going is Gonzaga.
Hell, not even sure UW would be third in the State of Washington after watching the two bigs at WSU develop this year.
So I’m not really sure recruits buy your narrative... and It’s not like I’m presenting these transfers as NBA-level ability talent... they’re solid, not special, but better than what we have.
Gonzaga is one of the finalists for the Gatorade National Player of the Year in 7'1" Chet Holgren.
You realize why Gonzaga might be a little higher interest for bigs than UW?
And Jackson and Abogidi are so far ahead of Grant, it's not even close.
But getting a McDonald's All American Power Forward is a far cry from whatever the hell it is you're saying.
And Chet Holmgren has a ton of talent, but he's also a twig. I'll be surprised if he gets much playing time w. the Bulldogs until he puts on a good 30 lbs.
We can all agree he’s a nice guy. Great. He has failed at nearly every facet of his current job.
We're the worst team in the world and woe is us and fire Hop and the AD.
And yes, after arguably two of the worst seasons in program history, back fo back, spare folks if we are not optimistic about Hop & Jen.
And for me, Hop is what he is. Needs to be fired, of course. But Jen owns this. She hired hop, let then her ego get the best of her after two good years and signed a ridiculous contract.
Great work.
As for Jackson Grant, discrediting Hop is a weird take considering the kid is fucking going to UW.
And we'll just disagree there. Grant is too good of a prospect to go to a program purely on allegiance. -
Christ you’re bad at this. I mean I understand you are taking an indefensible position and I give you credit for that but at least try to read.BroadcastingDawg said:

I didn’t argue anything about Grant as a recruit. My point was pretty clearly that you need to win more than ONE recruiting battle in two cycles.
Your roster size argument is bullshit. First of all we only ended up with a full roster by taking rejects from other programs as backups when we couldn’t recruit anyone. Second, Romar math. There is always room and that is especially true with ad much dead weight as Hop is currently carrying.

Stevenson, Bajema and Brooks are not "rejects from other programs"...
Stevenson played in all 37 games as a frosh and was their 2nd leading scorer as a soph. for a solid ass program in Wichita St.
Michigan, who is currently ranked 4th in the country, offered and brought Bajema in, who was a top-100 recruit.
Brooks was also a top-100 guy.
You act like these guys were 1-star shit heads from Bellingham who Hop had to take because he failed recruiting. Nonsense...

If those recruits are that covered, it further solidifies Hop is a fucktard of a coach.BroadcastingDawg said:

Look into what Shontay Liggems has done at EWU. Broom hop and bring in a guy who can recruit and develop players. Groves was a marginal D-1 player out of high school. He’s now the Big Sky MVP.
The dude can coach and recruit. He’d kill it at UW.

And lets actually talk about your 31 offers...
6 of them turned pro so that reduces your list to 25.
The Huskies didn't have a chance with/extended courtesy offers to: Cade Cunningham, Evan Mobley, Josh Christopher, Frank Kepnang, Jaden Harding, Peyton Watson, Nolan Hickman, Trey Patterson, Zaon Collins, Will McClendon...
Why? Because these are the cream of the crop players who played at major prep schools and had offers from the Dukes/Kentucky's/UNC's of the world and literally everyone BIG offers them... or did all other 30+ power teams who offered them and didn't land them fail as well?
Reduces your list to 14.
Then there's solid 4 star kids who do not fit the designation above but are literally from Alabama, Texas, West Virginia who just flat out couldn't locate Seattle on a map and clearly weren't coming here:
Jusuan Holt, Isaiah Cotrell, LJ Cryer...
Reduces your list to 11 players who realistically would come to UW, so yeah, if we're being honest its not really 31.
The Huskies offered but probably didn't care much to get: Braxton Meah, Kendall Munson, Lamont Butler, Mitchell Saxson, Noah Taitz, < - these are mostly players who signed w. mediocre programs knowing they'd never get minutes if they signed w. a Power Conference team... and these are players you'd be bitching about them signing anyway.
Reduces your list 5.
So what remains?
Paolo Banchero -> would have loved to have gotten him... but he chose to go to Duke... can't fault him there, even if they are coming off their worst season since 1996. He's a UW guy, but he chose a path to a lottery pick and the pros that's guaranteed.
Kaden Perry - > would have loved to have gotten him... but he signed with Gonzaga... he's from the Eastern side of the state and GU is the no. 1 team in the country at the moment... so no chance there.
Who we, in my opinion, failed to get that we should have had a chance with:
Shane Nowell -> why we didn't secure Jaylen's brother is beyond me and a failure in my eyes. we shouldn't be losing him to Arizona and it's a big loss.
Julian Strawther -> Dawgs were rumored to high on his list, but again... he chose Gonzaga... can't fault him there.
John Christofilis -> He should be a Husky... no excuse to let a kid go who is as solid ass shooter... and decided to go to Creighton...
^^^ These are the realistic misses
Even then, the guys who realistically had a chance with signed with Duke, Arizona, Gonzaga and Creighton... so it wasn't even like we had a serious chance here either considering how good these programs are year after year.
So basically... there were 6 guys they really wanted and had a chance to get based on geography and familiarity with the program... they got 1 in Jackson Grant.
They didn't fail on 31.

Jen’s buyout terms with Hop shows how beta she is
She signed that contract to 1) poison pill the contract for reimbursement if Hop left and 2) by locking in that contract she wouldn’t have to worry about upgrading the contract in the near future
Any contact that gets signed always needs to balance security vs keeping proper levels of incentive and motivation -
I'm not against signing coaches from smaller conferences... but if we're going to the Big Sky to get a head coach we're beyond fucked.PurpleThrobber said:

Especially when 75% of his roster is made up of white kids from Spokane.
Ritchie McKay could be a name to look at... Liberty was 28-6 in 2019 and beat a 5 seed Miss St. in the tournament, 30-4 last year and are 23-5 this year... they routinely beat power conference teams on their schedule. He went to SPU, was an assistant at UW in the mid 90's... head coach at OSU for 2 years in the early 2000's but his record wasn't special.
