It's pretty sad. Two of the Throbber's parents were educators from the tuff Korean War era. One of the Throbber kids is a teacher - but with relief, it is in a charter school and has a real heart for it. I worry she'll get ground up by the system at some point. She'd have been successful at whatever she chose to do so I wouldn't label all teachers as 'losers' - at 22 her resume and accomplishments are as good as your going to get.
But, yeah, generally, you're not getting the A-1 top end of the spectrum. Personally, I had great agony because at that age, I really wanted to teach and coach - but the pay was so horrific I just couldn't get do it. The money was too good elsewhere. Our kindergarten teacher with SPS was excellent. Sadly, we probably had one of the more insanely woke elementary schools in all of Seattle. Hence the official BLM week at school (pre Floyd death) + transgender pro noun studies for 6 year olds.
I will say that the Bend La Pine School district didn't seem to have nearly as much trouble with the unions pushing back on school opening. I think BLPS is the only one of the 10 largest district in the state to be open for in person.

Our kindergarten teacher with SPS was excellent. Sadly, we probably had one of the more insanely woke elementary schools in all of Seattle. Hence the official BLM week at school (pre Floyd death) + transgender pro noun studies for 6 year olds.
I will say that the Bend La Pine School district didn't seem to have nearly as much trouble with the unions pushing back on school opening. I think BLPS is the only one of the 10 largest district in the state to be open for in person.

Just spent a week in Bend and the homeless are generally stashed north of town and out of sight. Downtown area is clean and no sleeping bags or tents. 25% restaurant occupancy was generally considered a suggestion and not a requirement. D&D Bar and Grill (kind of a dive bar and grill, pretty sure my wife and I were the only "tourists" in there, was packed for Sunday breakfast and even had bar seating. Hope I make it to Friday for my shot before I die.
They seem to stash them all just by the on ramp to 97 north of Downtown. There's like 1 homeless shelter in the entire town and the locales don't seem to accommodating. Contrast this with Salem which isn't that much larger of a city than Bend (101K v 169K) and you have a massive bum problem. But Salem is far more left leaning and has a large number of "gospel mission" type places. Fuck that.
Bend ain't super RED anymore, but even the Dems here seem to be pretty chill about Covid. Not like Seattle at all where you get masked shamed in a park or walking down a residential side walk.
Never wore a mask unless I was in a store and only for seconds in a restaurant.

All the teachers of our youth who went through college on the GI Bill, dead or near dead. Those were the tuff motherfuckers who served in WWII and Korea.
Then the next set of tuff motherfuckers who served in Vietnam. Retired.
Those two saved a decent generation of teachers through about the mid 80's/early 90's. Same at the university level.

But, yeah, generally, you're not getting the A-1 top end of the spectrum. Personally, I had great agony because at that age, I really wanted to teach and coach - but the pay was so horrific I just couldn't get do it. The money was too good elsewhere. Had that been available then, I'd be taking summers off, for sure.

Prior to the pandemic, I thought most corona viruses (viri?) were associated with colds and any idiot knows that you don't need a vaccine for colds.
The trial has been so fast in concluding the first two phases because of the head start provided by previous work on coronavirus vaccines in Oxford, the acceleration of administrative and funding processes, and the huge interest in the trial which meant no time was spent searching for volunteers.
