Beggar too clean
having worked in engineering for years - I can relate to this movie. Many of my cow-orkers fit this guy to a tee. Scary -
Yeah Kirk’s son looks like a laid off McDonnell Douglas engineer from Long Beach or something.LebamDawg said:Beggar too clean

You were in Vietnam? As what the little drummer boy?

Sorry to disagree. As someone who lived in LA when the movie came out the thought that neo-Nazis represented some kind of threat in LA was laughable. They purposely pulled their punches when it came to making this a realistic movie. They should have based the movie is "Springfield" because it had no basis in the reality of LA in the early 90s.RaceBannon said:Great movie

You’re not sorry.

I don't remember neo nazis. I know he was the angry white guy that was a big narrative at the time but he was good at itSFGbob said:

Oh for love of god, it's a make believe Hollywood movie. LA sucks ballz. Much of the film did a good jerb of portraying the shitieness of LA. And I say that as I guy who lived in San Diego county when that flick came out. We couldn't get through that place quick enough on our way north.SFGbob said:

That's not the way the movie was marketed or discussed. It was held out to be some kind of realistic, slice of modern America and a social commentary. They weren't trying to create a fantasy movie. Would you have the same opinion of a version of Boys in the Hood that depicted white people are the real victims of police brutality in LA?YellowSnow said:

Maybe we can remake Menace II Society using the same locations and story line but make Mormons the lead characters.
Hey, just a make believe Hollywood movie, so no big deal. -
I don't read anything into the surplus store scene as suggesting Neo Nazis representing some major threat to LA. And Douglas's character tells that guy to F.O. anyhow.SFGbob said:

Apparently Koreans were pissed off about the movie and it got banned in S Korea.
At any rate, I don't really give a crap about Hollywood's agenda here. It remember enjoying the movie when it came out and thought it was entertaining. I don't need to pick it apart further than that. -
Some people view everything through a political lens.YellowSnow said:

Other people enjoy movies. -
So if we remade Menace II Society and put white people in the lead roles changing nothing else you'd be cool with it. Okay.
The decision to pull their punches in making Falling Down was entirely political. -

May be so, doesn't mean it didn't happen. Ignorance is bliss.

Obviously not people who enjoy a false reality spoon fed to them as long as it's wrapped in "entertainment."
Can't wait for the WWII movies depicting Nazis as the real victims.

If I gave a fuck about the politics of so many of my favorite entertainers, I'd have nothing to enjoy.SFGbob said:dnc said:

Don't give a fuck about Michael Douglas politics. But I can't mindlessly watch a movie when they are obviously pushing a narrative for political reasons and ignore the narrative. Like I said, if they wanted to make a fantasy movie they shouldn't put it in LA and promoted it as a realistic slice of urban life. Different strokes. You're free to watch movies ignoring the narrative and or agenda being pushed, and I'm free to acknowledge it. Neither is right or wrong.YellowSnow said:

I understand and appreciate the point. I'm just saying like @dnc that it's exhausting to try and look at everything through a political lens 24/7. I can watch a movie like Falling Down and find it entertaining and not care about the agenda.SFGbob said:

I still don't understand the criticism. Been a long time since I've seen the movie, so I don't remember it all. What are the punches that were supposedly pulled? Why would depicting Neo-Nazis in LA be pulling punches?
-
Movie was made in 1992. That year LA set their all time murder rate numbers. 1992 was also the year of the LA riots. Crime and violence in LA in 1992 were out of control. Neo-nazis weren't driving those numbers. If you're trying to display the urban dystopia that was LA in 1992, focusing on neo-Nazis and vaguely Hispanic gang bangers and old white guys golfing doesn't quite get you there.1to392831weretaken said:I still don't understand the criticism. But hey, NOC so why are we even discussing this? -
It's about time someone took a stand for the poor, bullied, unfairly represented Nazi.SFGbob said:

I thought you didn't care? Depict neo-Nazis, any way you like, hell make them responsible for global warming and the Covid pandemic I don't give a fuck. Just don't tell me that it represents some form of reality or that it depicts a slice of real life. But you don't care so why are you responding?dnc said:
