I'll give them one more excuse because I like the NBA
However, I forget the season has started more often than not because it just ended and its football season
After the Super Bowl with the regular rhythm up to the playoffs will tell the tale. Bad playoff ratings with James and the Lakers and the Nets back east is trouble -
Ratings in general are down in most sports
I believe the biggest reason is they have completely lost the fair weather fan. No fans in stadiums means less people are interested in watching a game. The fair weather fan needs all the reasons they can get to watch a game. A full stadium is one of these things. Add to this that no fair weather fans can attend a game and they lose interest as well.
Now add to this the covid economic/health factor.....fair weather fans realize there are a lot more important things in life than sports. They are worried about jobs and money and in some cases their life. So sports means even less to them and as a result the fair weather fan simply doesn’t give a fuck about sports. So they don’t watch and the ratings subside -
For some perspective, youtube hoopers are garnering about half the views of these games. Sometimes more.

Could be due to streaming of the games as well...correct me if I am wrong but I don't believe that tv ratings include those streaming numbers.

Side note, Rahmel Dockery that played for Curtis and Oregon State if a football Youtuber/IG/TikToker. I saw him filming some stuff this summer. It took him probably 50 attempts to make a crazy catch. It’s really corny and boring shit, but it makes him a great living, so more power to him. -
The NBA is losing ratings because of the competition aspect. You could bet your house on one of 4 teams to win the championship each year, and you'll get it right. Small markets can't compete long term. If the NBA wanted to be more interesting again, they should go with a hard cap, but that will never happen.

NBA Netted Huge Viewership Increase In MLK Day Primetime Coverage
The NBA continued its strong start to the season in viewership behind a busy Martin Luther King Jr. Day lineup, headlined by two key matchups between the Milwaukee Bucks and Brooklyn Nets and Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers.
The Warriors and Lakers capped off a jam-packed schedule, drawing an average of 2.2 million viewers, an increase of 84% based on the same telecast window from last year. Overall, the primetime doubleheader coverage on TNT averaged 2.1 million viewers for an increase of 31% versus last year’s coverage.
The marquee contest saw the Warriors overcome a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Lakers, 115-113. Stephen Curry scored a game-high 26 points while LeBron James had 19 points with Anthony Davis adding 17 points, 17 rebounds and seven assists.
In addition to the strong viewership numbers on MLK Day, which marks the second-largest day of programming of the season, the league also saw the opening week end as the most-watched since 2012, with combined viewership up 67% compared to last year.
Amidst an unprecedented season in the NBA, fans have continued to tune into games at a high volume to watch the stars of the league take the court each night.
