It could be said that in the lack of a big villain Americans turn on themselves. First the soviets and to a smaller extent the early “war on terror” seemed to keep us relatively cohesive. China is and should be that enemy, and Trump could have pointed that out and made it a unifying force, but unfortunately he is just a skilled rhetorical politician and not actually a leader.
