In five years Shah Deniz Stage 2 will be sending gas into Europe and Russia will have to play nice. This is Putin's chance to throw Gazprom's weight around while he still has it. I don't have a good sense of the untapped natural gas reserves on the Norwegian shelf that Statoil could start developing but again in the five year timeline of Shah Deniz stage 2 the UK could have a gas boom if it wanted. Right now there is political opposition to that but if Europe will pay for an alternative to Russian gas it could happen. There is a large, untouched natural gas resource that is accessible with modern technology in the UK.
In the meantime Europe does need Russian gas... -
