Ok, as a CURRENT student, I would like to weigh in and say that it was made pretty clear that communism has never worked and will never work.
The teachers didn't explicitly say that, but they didn't need to - all sources assigned to us in class, even our materials on/about the manifesto, made clear the failures of totalitarian government.
Fact of the matter is, NO MATTER THE SYSTEM, absolute power corrupts. Communism could be the most effective system the world has ever seen and it still wouldn't work for that exact reason.
And, communism is not the most effective system the world has ever seen, and is in reality far from it based on what we have seen in its application.
You can debate the merits of communism all you want (there really aren't any), and it still doesn't change the fact that it will never work.
And this is what was taught in a very liberal school. You can imagine how it is in most schools across America. I don't think this is a big concern.
Socialism is "just the gateway to communism," so basically, yes. The whole idea of socialism is supposed to be that you have a democratically elected government that governs the country in essentially the same style as communism.
And, of course, it will never work, and it was shown pretty clearly that a socialist country has not worked. It's not that hard to realize, again, that absolute power corrupts and that no matter the system, absolute power cannot and will not work. That's why the whole gateway to communism thing doesn't work. Once you open the gateway, you're going there. You give government that power, they go all the way.
We have seen, again and again, failed applications of socialism and failed applications of communism. We have also seen failed applications of totalitarianism. It's not a coincidence that systems in which the government has outright, complete power have never worked.
Again, we were given all of the resources, and not one student that I know came to the conclusion that socialism or communism are some magical ideals. This is a super liberal school.
As to the question about why lots of young people prefer the democratic socialists as opposed to mainstream candidates (i.e. skrong Bernie supporters):
-For the most part, young people tend to be very progressive, but then as time shifts and civilization develops, we become more conservative. There's a lot of talk about how liberals have pushed the country left or conservatives have gone off-the-deep-end right. Which is fucking stupid. Progressives, by nature, will push for more and more reform. The reason conservatives *look* far right is because they're in the same place that they were 40 years ago. They're conservatives. That's how that shit works.
-Young people agree with lots of policies that are in the more publicized part of a democratic socialist platform. The green new deal, free healthcare - sounds great! The ignorance of the practical applications and what they mean is what is lost on people who simply have not lived in the real world yet.
-Everything is unfair! We are the first generation that is less likely to be better off than our parents were, so we look around and are like, wtf? How do we make this fair? And the candidates that propose the most CHANGE (which is key, people unsatisfied with the system will always want change, good or bad) are going to be the ones that young people turn to. Guess what? Democratic Socialists propose loads of change! When the system isn't working for you, the automatic response for a LOT of people is "change the system," and they don't question how or why. Democratic socialists offer CHANGE and a lot of young people do not look into the merits of that actual change.
We hear "free healthcare" and go, yeah, sounds great! I want that! Most people, though, look at how it would happen, and say, wow, we really can't do that. Sure, premiums for healthcare are too high and we should try and make it more accessible, but we can't feasibly make it free, so what should we do? That's how a rational, experienced thinker handles it, but young people are just going to shout CHANGE without comprehending it.
-The "handouts" stereotype is pretty pervasive and not altogether untrue. The fact of the matter is: college educations have become super expensive and crippling, and it's a lot more competitive now. It's harder to do well and the middle class isn't exactly burgeoning. So a lot of young people want that remedied and so they want CHANGE in any way.
Embarrassing is thinking that reading or assigning students some Marx is indicative of a student or teacher's politics. Sorry to break this to you, but Darwin, Marx and Freud are subjects of study in modern history, economics, even business. (Except maybe at Evergreen in the mid-70s.)
Spent a quarter studying Kropotkin and Stirner but the prof certainly wasn’t advocating for anarchy...
In Econ classes it was constantly brought up how planned economies always fail.
Yeah, there are lots of good reasons to assign the Communist Manifesto in college coursework. I've read in it at least one course. You might need to think this "proof" through a bit.

With all due respect, something is rotten in Denmark with your claim as being a CURRENT student. You’ve been around since early 2017 and you absolutely crushed the Marshalls pickem a couple years ago. 19 year olds don’t do that.
You also would be the only active current poster who is a current student. Your prose, while not being technically gifted is well beyond a 21 y/o.
Unless you are an older grad student, I call bullshit.

OTOH he was easily the expert at 2010s rap and had plenty of info on Truckbed Gate.
I’ve never found his claims about his age to be suspect. He just doesn’t happen to be an idiot like some.
I had a pair of high school teachers that somehow managed a summer vacation to Moscow in the mid 70's. Made us look at their slide show. It was U.S. government class and we never studied the US government for a second. All communism and socialism all the tim. They were BIG fans. Fuck them.

Agree he isn't an idiot. I think he is projecting his views on his fellow students and profs though
It is possible to survive and remain a staunch anti communist after indoctrination.

I am quite literally below 19 years of age, I assure you. So, thank you, but I can in fact confirm that I am a current student. I can send you a picture of my student ID if you really need it.

Indeed, your lack of education about US government is on display here daily.

Yet you’re all-in on the China Way of manufacturing, Mr. GOP. Are you related to the Amash family from Michigan?
