Sources believe coronavirus originated in Wuhan lab as part of China's efforts to compete with US

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/coronavirus-wuhan-lab-china-compete-us-sources

EXCLUSIVE: COVID-19 originated in a Wuhan laboratory not as a bioweapon, but as part of China's effort to demonstrate that its efforts to identify and combat viruses are equal to or greater than the capabilities of the United States, multiple sources who have been briefed on the details of early actions by China's government and seen relevant materials tell Fox News.

No trouble believing that, but I’d like to see another outlet independently corroborate

The rumor appeared shortly after the new coronavirus struck China and spread almost as quickly: that the outbreak now afflicting people around the world had been manufactured by the Chinese government.

The conspiracy theory lacks evidence and has been dismissed by scientists. But it has gained an audience with the help of well-connected critics of the Chinese government such as Stephen K. Bannon, President Trump’s former chief strategist. And on Sunday, it got its biggest public boost yet.

Speaking on Fox News, Senator Tom Cotton, Republican of Arkansas, raised the possibility that the virus had originated in a high-security biochemical lab in Wuhan, the Chinese city at the center of the outbreak.

"The sources believe the initial transmission of the virus was bat-to-human, and that "patient zero" worked at the laboratory, then went into the population in Wuhan."

    Additional reporting
    https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/15/politics/us-intelligence-virus-started-chinese-lab/index.html

US intelligence and national security officials say the United States government is looking into the possibility that the novel coronavirus originated in a Chinese laboratory rather than a market, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter who caution it is premature to draw any conclusions.

The theory is one of multiple being pursued by investigators as they attempt to determine the origin of the coronavirus that has resulted in a pandemic and killed hundreds of thousands. The US does not believe the virus was associated with bioweapons research, and officials noted that the intelligence community is also exploring a range of other theories regarding the origination of the virus, as would typically be the case for high-profile incidents, according to an intelligence source.
The theory has been pushed by supporters of the President, including some congressional Republicans, who are eager to deflect criticisms of Trump's handling of the pandemic.

An intelligence official familiar with the government analysis said a theory US intelligence officials are investigating is that the virus originated in a laboratory in Wuhan, China, and was accidentally released to the public. Other sources told CNN that US intelligence hasn't been able to corroborate the theory but is trying to discern whether someone was infected in the lab through an accident or poor handling of materials and may have then infected others.

US intelligence is reviewing sensitive intelligence collection aimed at the Chinese government, according to the intelligence source, as they pursue the theory. But some intelligence officials say it is possible the actual cause may never be known.

I find it funny and annoying that some consider this a "conspiracy theory." I think it's quite the opposite. People make mistakes and do dumb shit all the time.

It's entirely possible. It's also entirely possible it came from a bat. People being stupid isn't really a conspiracy, though. It's just everyday life.

Is the conspiracy that the Chinese released the virus intentionally?

Some proggies are calling even an accidental release a conspiracy theory. Bullshit, that's just shit-happens-life. Covering that accident up, sure, that's a conspiracy.

Conspiracy theory is just a way to discredit something you are too lazy to actually discredit, It sounds scary and stupid.

We conspire every day with people of like mind to reach a common goal. That's not sinister its life. If someone fucks up in a lab the lab is going to come together and cover it up. That is a conspiracy. Not the Illuminati. Just your everyday ass covering we see all the tim

I believe it and believed it the moment it came out. I also believed as quite plausible the version of it that had the bioweapon spin. Because it's all plausible.

To be clear, there are all kinds of conspiracy theories. A lot of them. I think we all mean by that term the shit that the tin foil hat crowd comes up with. Like Pizza Parlor Child Porn rings. A quarter of all the people I know in Aberdeen are making Alex Jones rich with vitamin purchases and post shit every day that starts with "Shit's gettin' real; get your ammo now while you can." I'm not making that up.

There are conspiracy theories and there are actual conspiracies. I think there are plenty of both. I think there are plenty of the latter in China.

Btw, I'm still mad as hell at @RoadDawg55 because China.

Personally with regard to China, I wouldn't even call this shit conspiracy theories. More standard operating procedure.

Even suggesting that the virus came from a Chinese lab in late February and early March would get you labeled as a conspiracy theorist.

I know some people will want to point to the Fox news article linked within, but let's not forget that it was Grundle who first brought this to the mainstream and gave it legitimacy.

Not by me. I bought it the very first time I heard it. And at the time, I was buying the bio-weapon version, which I assume, but don't know for a fact, has not been entirely dismissed.
