I get not wanting to waste tests on people that have already passed, but at least do small random sample so they would come up with a decent approximation.

Bearslose ain't the smartest bear at Jellystone. But he does fit the stereotypical view that Cal students love free sh*t.

Just a month ago you all loved to reference the swine flu death numbers. Guess what? Those numbers were estimates too because a majority of those who contracted the virus weren't tested. There were only 18.5k laboratory confirmed deaths worldwide but the CDC estimated the actual deaths to be over 284k. I can't find a lab confirmed death total for the US but it's likely well below the final 12k estimate the CDC landed on.

    https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2012/06/cdc-estimate-global-h1n1-pandemic-deaths-284000

Working with admittedly sparse data, a research team led by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has estimated the global death toll from the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic at more than 284,000, about 15 times the number of laboratory-confirmed cases.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has put the number of deaths from confirmed 2009 H1N1 flu at a minimum of 18,449, but that number is regarded as well below the true total, mainly because many people who die of flu-related causes are not tested for the disease.

If the Government just gives the Hospitals their? $145,000,000 instead, will they report COD’s correctly again?

Obama really fucked us on testing. Blood on his hands.

So Obama didn't pad the numbers. What's your point? Paying scorekeepers off can work the same both directions.

The point is adding more deaths to the pandemic body count isn't driven by political agenda. It's scientists and researchers doing their job. Obama didn't whine about the CDC adding 15x to the total death count of Swine Flu but I'm sure Trump and his cult will cry Fake News! when the final Covid estimates eventually come out.

My state wasn't locked down during H1N1. My friends and family's businesses weren't closed by force of law during H1N1. My kids weren't removed from school during H1N1. The correct numbers matter because proper policies matter.
But doesn't that further prove the point that some mitigation measures were necessary? H1N1 was mild compared to Covid. H1N1 was estimated to kill 12k ppl over the course of one year when there were very little to no mitigation measures. Even with draconian mitigation measures, Covid has killed at least 25k ppl in a little over a month, final estimates will be even higher.

This article doesn't go very in depth but provides a good high level explanation
