For the last 4-5 years before my father-in-law died, I always fucked with him on the meanings of "throw your hat in the ring" and "throw in the towel".
I told him that throwing your hat in the ring obviously meant you were done, i.e., you're about to put your hat on to go outside while throwing in the towel was a sign that you ready to take on a task and the towel was there to wipe the sweat from your brow. -
