Why are face masks so ubiquitous in Asian cultures? I mean they are common place year round and not just in cold and flu season. Is is a reaction to living in high density thing- e.g., Tokyo, Seoul, Peking, Shanghai, etc? In Seattle this week, I've hardly seen a Caucasian wearing a face masks. Many folks of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc, ancestry are.

From what I understand, sick Asians wear them as a courtesy to others.

Because they are weird.
I wore a mask one summer when I was removing asbestos. Never before and never since. I remember people wearing them in 1981 after mt St. Helens erupted -

Good times, man. Good times. Nothing like trying to sweep that shit - it was like fine silt. Then you'd try to spray it with a garden hose and it turned into this cement-like goop. My two dads eventually got the street in front of our house cleared out and dumped gallons of that crap in the front yard.MikeDamone said:Because they are weird.

Good for the wheat crop in the 509 ultimately. Bumper yields after that.

I owned a chemical manufacturing company that produced both dry/dusty and VOC liquids that can kill you if not handled correctly. The threaded masks with nothing but a metal band across the nose and rubber band around your neck are worthless unless you are sick and trying to contain a broadcast sneeze. If you are wearing it to filter pollution I guess it can help but air is still getting around the edges. It ain't blocking everything.

My frat house was shut down due to asbestos a couple years after I moved out. You don't see me complaining.
