    UCLA played a very tough non conference schedule every year. Most Pac 10 teams did but UCLA was playing Nebraska and stuff. They would start slow and hit their stride in league play. I don't think he cared. The Rose Bowl was the prize. He wanted his team ready to play in conference
    Which is why trying to make college football into the NFL has always been so stupid. The Rose Bowl was the Super Bowl and all you needed to worry about getting there.
