The problem with Friedman - who I love in theory - is that politics after all is the art of the possible and the welfare state isn’t going away.
The reason I am in favor of pumping the breaks a bit on low skilled immigration (legal or illegal) is that we are making it way to easy for native born males to drop out of the labor force entirely. The idea immigrants have stolen jobs from hard working Americans is laughable. 95% of Americans already struggle making ends meet. Without Walmart and goods made overseas those people are fucked. The cost of American manufacturing would drive the prices on goods high enough the majority of folks couldn't afford to buy them.
America is still about the opportunity for a better life. Work at McDonalds and mow lawns when your young, learn a skill or trade and carve out your future. It's easier than ever to start a manufacturing business in the states using overseas labor. Develop an idea, have the Chinese build it, sell it on Amazon.
