Thread in which we quote famous philosophers, statesmen, and playwrights

- Marcus Aurelius
"Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing."
- Macbeth in Macbeth
“There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.”
- JRR Tolkien
"This is the biggest crock of shit I've ever read. Good Lord in the late 60 ' s and 70 ' s the butt hole was a fancy feast. Who is anybody to think butt fucking is on the upswing. Every couple, except More_cock and his wife, have made woopie in the butt Bob. People are people."

"We may have our own opinions about slavery; we may be for or against the South; but there is no doubt that Jefferson Davis and other leaders of the South have made an army; they are making, it appears, a navy; and they have made what is more than either—they have made a Nation... We may anticipate with certainty the success of the Southern States so far as regards their separation from the North. That's right. I've killed women and children. I've killed just about everything that walks or crawled at one time or another. And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you did to Ned.
I was lucky in the order, but I've always been lucky when it comes to killin' folks.
Well, that one in the center, he had a flap holster and he was in no itchin' hurry. And the one second from the left, he had scared eyes; he wasn't gonna do nothin'. But that one on the far left, he had crazy eyes. Figured him to make the first move. -

"People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway.
What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway.
Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway.
In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway."

Was looking for another quote by John Locke and ran across this gem:He who appropriates land to himself by his labor, does not lessen but increases the common stock of mankind. For the provisions serving to the support of human life, produced by one acre of inclosed and cultivated land, are … ten times more than those which are yielded by an acre of land, of an equal richness lying waste in common. And therefore he that incloses land and has a greater plenty of the conveniences of life from ten acres than he could have from a hundred left to nature, may truly be said to give ninety acres to mankind.

Agree. I think Mother Theresa's heart was in the right place, but I think it's fair game to state the obvious here: which is that the most proven method of reducing poverty throughout the world is to not have more mouths than you can feed. RCC stance on BC flies in the face of this.GrundleStiltzkin said:

I'm not at all trying to convince you of the doctrine. However, it's far more nuanced than that.YellowSnow said:

Mods, smart people, a ????
There was a quote or sentiment from a Locke-era European political philosopher on the notion of free speech, which had something like that even falsehoods serve to make truth more evident. Anyone remember who that was? -

“I hope they now go and take a look at the oranges, the oranges of the investigation, the beginnings of that investigation. You look at the origin of the investigation, where it started, how it started, who started it, whether it’s McCabe or Comey or a lot of them.
“Where does it go, how high up in the White House did it go? You will all get Pulitzer Prizes, OK? You’ll all get Pulitzer Prizes. You should have looked at it a long time ago and that’s the only thing that’s disappointing to me about the Mueller report.
“The Mueller report I wished covered the oranges, how it started, the beginnings of the investigation, how it started. It didn’t cover that, and for some reason none of that was discussed.” -
