The thing that this misses is this: I remember a time when a comparison with Oregon wasn't even a thing. Literally nobody ever did it. You didn't need to say anything. Oregon fans just hated Washington because ... but there wasn't much more to the discussion than that.

It isn't as if this is all due to some surge in Oregon's football success.
A lot of it is simply due to the fact that we have more Oregon fans living in the Seatle area now.
My neighbors are a great example. Their kid couldn't get into the UW, so is attending Oregon instead.
Some of it is due to Oregon's success in the last 20 years though, and this happening during the age of the interweb.

Yeah I think it's the latter. Let's not kid ourselves. Everybody's got a neighbor story, but more people here seems to have little to do with this. The rivalry has been hot for some time, and well precedes Washington's ascension in the admission's game, which as an historical matter is relatively recent.
It is entirely due to Oregon's success. The gaps in the numbers cited in the OP were gargantuan when I was a kid ... hell when I was in college. It began to shift when I was in LS. That was a long time ago. They've closed them considerably.
Yours is almost a doog take ... trying to explain something with an obvious cause by twisting into a pretzel to make it about UW academis. That's bullshit. Everybody hated Oregon when you could get into UW with a 3.5 and a 950 SAT score.
