Furthermore, California’s high margin STEM Industries attract the best and brightest from across the globe to fill gaps our domestic supply cannot fill. A smart US immigration policy would include guest workers and a path to citizenship for illegals. It would also include an ample supply of the highest achievers from wherever they exist. Just such a law passed the US Senate in 2013. It never came up for a vote in the protectionist, nationalist, nativist House.
The US under trump however is not a smart country. Current us immigration policy caters to the fears and incompetence of an aging and incompetent domestic supply of labor (aka “white trash”).

A path to citizenship for which illegals? Highly productive members of society who have overstayed their visas and are currently employed? Sure. Asylum for all including cartel members, criminals fleeing prosecution in their own country, and other "deplorables"? Not so much. I'm listening, spell out more details of exactly what you want or are thinking.
US immigration policy hasn't been smart in my lifetime at least. Much of that, especially here in California, is because the Dems would like to keep the status quo of having a second class of people at their disposal politically and economically. I'm on board with a liberalization of the immigration system so long as we return to the rule of law and have, as you say, a smart immigration policy. I haven't seen either party propose anything that resembles the latter but the Dems are content with completely ignoring the former.
As Trump sometimes does, either through intuition or through blind luck, he has the potential to upset the status quo and blend something that is popular with conservative Republicans and the traditionally Democratic white working class. This is pretty much my only hope that immigration policy will significantly change. He has the opportunity to push the Dems to a breaking point where they finally are forced to take a stance between Nativism and protectionism or neo-liberalism and more open immigration. If he doesn't manage it, it probably won't change for at least another decade or several. -
What ever happened to the Dreamers thing that was all over the place in 2017? Why hasn’t congress passed a bill to address it? All they have to do is give a little for the wall and the dreamers are golden.
