OFFICIAL Philippines v Canada WAR thread

Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte's threat to "declare war" on Canada within a week if it doesn't clean up its act and remove tons of trash shipped to Manila is most likely just garbage.

While it's true the two nations have strained ties, Duterte's erratic rants and incendiary remarks have become his calling card. He often prefaces his remarks with "mother f--ker," boasts about killing people in his teens and says things like wanting to eat a terrorist's liver.

On Tuesday, the trash-talking leader demanded Canada come get tons of trash that was wrongly sent to the Philippines in 2013 and 2014. He warned that if Canada doesn't get its ducks in a row, he will "declare war against them."

"I will not allow that kind of s--t," Duterte said at a press conference on Tuesday.

While it's highly unlikely he'll take any sort of drastic measure, if war were to break out, a comparison of military might seems to indicate Canada would crush its competition.

According to a 2019 comparison of military power, Canada ranks 21 out of 137 countries while the Philippines comes in at a distant 64.

Hard call here. Filipinos are crazy ( @Sledog ' s beloved .45 ACP was invented with them in mind) . But Canada fought the US to a tie once and stormed the beaches of Normandy.

Trash sent in 2013-14? Looks like he's really on top of things.

Decline and fall of the Royal Navy. Britain had 4 carriers in 1982 and 1 now. They were still at tuff Cold War ally in the 80's. Not so much anymore. Thatcher > May and it's not even close.

It's what happens to every country that adopts a Government run healthcare system.

It sucks up every available dollar and it still delivers shitty care.

Great photo opp. But MacArthur's return to the Philippines was a complete waste and did nothing to hasten Japan's surrender. Probably got a lot more Filipinos killed than would have otherwise been the case if we just left it on the vine to rot.

While our care is better for most Americans, we still face the same issue- i.e., spending on old people competing with defense dollars. In the 1950s we could devote a much larger percentage of GDP to defense than would ever be politically possible now because there was not Medicare of Medicaid yet and life expectancy was 60 ish.

Sure. That was the gist. Just didn't help much to win the war is all I'm saying. That war was won based on 3 primary factors:

    - Our? Boeing
    - Submarines
    - And the Ruskies throwing their hats in the ring

I gave 2- i.e., military capability and political will.

    I don't have 3 more reasons.

They could barely project power into the South Atlantic even then. Falklands taught them that they needed to beef up their power projection capabilities, but then the end of the Cold War and declining threat perception has led to a gutting of the force. Fewer ships but each ship has greater capabilities, but then they're too valuable to risk losing somewhere. Even when the QE-class flattops are available they'll likely only be used in conjunction with American/NATO forces

Trust me, I'm not in favor of Medicare or Medicaid either. Our problem is bad, just not as bad as the Europeans. We've transformed our governments into healthcare and retirement providers two things government does very poorly and at great cost. We were a tougher and better people before the expansion of the welfare state.

I just rolled the odometer over 90,000 miles today on the 2006 4 Runner and put my 10% in the 401K with company match. But @Swaye is trying to get me to buy a fleet of Rolex watches so I might be fucked.

You've done a good job of convincing me of the decline of the British military.

You've failed to mention the devolution of Argentina into borderline 3rd world from it's zenith of military power in the early 80's.
