Leeland Stanford Jr's achievements were significant but Jefferson bought 827,000 sq miles for $15,000,000 .

Alaska 663,300 sq miles bought from the Russkies for $7.2 Million - known at the time as "Seward's folly."

Alaska's GDP is $54 Billion. Louisiana's alone is $261 Billion. This doesn't even account for the rest of the purchase. Louisiana Purchase rather easily.

I would have been happy to make either deal. Never understood why we didn't take/buy the section of Western Canada, BC and the Yukon Territory that connects the lower 48 to Alaska.

One way to look at it. Another would be the cost of Russian sovereign territory in North America.
Yes, this is a valid poont. Still, I think we would have got it from Russia at some other point prior to 1917. But we don't deal in hypotheticals even though they are FUN.

    54-40 or fight!

I am still in favor of annexing all of Canada except for the Maritimes and the frogs.

In fun random territorial takes, the only reason why Baja California isn't part of the rest of California is because no one was aware that US forces were successful in taking Baja when the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed.

The Newfies are excellent drinkers. I’d bring those fucks in in a heartbeat. If it wasn’t for some political shenanigans, they’d have joined the USA post WW2.

Fun loving people. Not quite as big of drunks as the micks

The GOLD in them thar hills in Alaska have a lot to do with the growth of Seattle back in the days of the Exposition

And I reckon if we went in and drilled for all the oil in Alaska it would be impressive

At the LSU moral victory home game before WE BEAT IDAHO in 2009, I met a recently retired off shore rig foreman who was from Baton Rouge. Dude tailgates in like a $250,000 RV down there. Lot of oil and gas money down there in the Gulf too.

Dude invited us to his tailgate in 2012 and my frens (I didn't go) went by his tailgate that year and saw the RV.
