I thought the new green flying trains wouldn't need tracks.sarktastic said:
So, why continue to hammer on 1850’s tech as a solution to our future transportation needs?Pitchfork51 said:
Yeah. It's not a great fit on the west coast. The NE corridor is good and some places that are a bit farther than normal but don't have much in between like Texas just because it's relatively cheap to build.SFGbob said:
Also, take into consideration that high speed rail in places like Europe takes you from cities that have good existing metro transportation systems to other cities that also have good metro transit systems. You don't need a car to get around in many of those places. If you're traveling from Fresno to Bakersfield what the hell are you going to do with you get there? Ride their shitty bus system? No, you're going to need a car.Pitchfork51 said:
People in countries that have it really like it. It works great in areas that are a good fit. We simply don't have many of those here.sarktastic said:High speed rail is for Contractors, Politicians with edifice complexes and fact free Greeners void of critical thought.
A rail that ran from LA to SF would work but the cost isn't worth it and the only way you could ever compete price wise with air travel would be to heavily subsidize the cost of ticket.
LA to SF is a nightmare. Tons of stuff in between. Tunnelling through mountains and shit too. -
Who? It's a good option in certain places. California is not one of those places.sarktastic said:

Or Europe either
The reality is that Europe’s trains are enjoyed by tourists, but they don't work that much better for Europeans than the U.S. system works for Americans. According to a report published by the European Union

Fun anecdote, in my days working for multinationals there was a metric unofficially called "slush" that was calculated based on the costs associated with what it would take to spend on a project to make it happen given the "regulatory" burden. California was one of leaders in the world in "slush". It exceeded even such transparent countries such as Russia & South Africa.SFGbob said:
Anyone who followed the cost overruns associated with building the new Bay Bridge now knows that 3rd world level political corruption associated with the building of public works projects has come to America and is now well established in America.UW_Doog_Bot said:
Nah, no banana republic kind of stuff like that would happen in California!Postal91 said:Wasn't Pelosi's husband, or one of those witches, get this billion dollar contract for the development? Hilarious that the California government felt they could build something. Wonder where all those funds go now... Or even if they really felt they'd be successful and simply pulled a huge money grab.
[Mainstream media also ignored or downplayed the serious irregularities associated with the processing of Caltrain’s grant application. The Obama FTA submitted it to Congress (as required) at the very last minute (2 days before Trump inauguration) when there is the usual chaos and confusion associated with a change in administrations. The Acting FTA Chief promoting the grant, Carolyn Flowers, took a job at AECOM – a Caltrain contractor – two weeks after submitting the grant to Congress] -
Yeah, that’s a fun anecdote. Did you share it with everyone at the tsio rose bowl tailgate? Your days with multinationals?UW_Doog_Bot said:
