Now all the UW needs to do is fire Mike Hopkins and hire either Brandon Roy or Mark Pope (BYU head coach)...
As a next step forward, University of Washington Intercollegiate Athletics (ICA) announced today it has secured Gensler and Mortenson as the architect and builder, respectively, to design and construct the Basketball Training & Operations Facility and Health & High Performance Center. The project, which has already received approval from the University of Washington Board of Regents, is expected to open in 2024. The new facility will be funded entirely by donations to ICA, and to date, the department has secured $53 million in commitments.
"Selecting the architect and builder for our project is an incredibly exciting next step," said Jennifer Cohen, Director of Athletics. "We can't wait to partner with Mortenson and Gensler to watch this new facility, which will greatly enhance the student-athlete experience for future Huskies, come to life."
The Basketball Training & Operations Facility and Health & High Performance Center will be located on the current site of the Hec Edmundson Pavilion Pool. The facility will feature state-of-the-art practice courts, locker rooms, recruiting/player lounges, film rooms and a new front porch to celebrate the history and significance of both programs. Connected to the facility will be an enhanced performance center.
"We are thrilled to be a part of this exciting time of transformation for UW Athletics – one that will undoubtedly make a positive impact on the greater campus and community," said Kristin Jensen, Co-Managing Director for Gensler Seattle. "We believe this project has the opportunity to enhance and influence the experiences and outcomes of future UW student-athletes, championship teams, and coaches for years to come, and we're excited to partner with the UW team to bring the vision to life."
"Working with the University and Gensler in this integrated approach embodies the spirit of collegiate athletics, where groups of talented individuals of diverse backgrounds and skillsets come together to push the limits of what is possible," said Tamara Hartner, Mortenson Design Phase Executive. "We at Mortenson are excited to take part in creating yet another state-of-the-art training facility for our UW athletes."
