The Mariners signed an aging Gary Mathews about thirty years ago. He had once been a prolific home run hitter for the Cubs, but now had arthritis. In his first game as a Mariner, he hit like a 500 foot home run in the Kingdome, and manager Dick Williams said, "Well he doesn't have arthritis in his bat." But then he batted something like .180 with a couple of homers for the next few weeks and they released him.
