Because the GOP today is the only place for those who aren't brain dead or hard leftists, the party itself has changed. DeSantis has the conservatives but Trump has by far the largest base inside the GOP. Made up of all sorts of malcontents like myself who have never really been what is traditionally considered a conservative. Then there is the Never Trump er Never DeSantis wing. If DeSantis can navigate that he might have a shot but its not like the campaign is going to be on his issues. It will be a steady stream of lies and the housewives will buy it. Yes he is better at defending himself and his issues but the narrative isn't interested
Democrats know that their issues suck so the playbook of destroy your opponent is what they have. Social media allowing individual voters to be targeted and shamed into voting a certain way also matters. Most people are weak minded and want to be part of the crowd and the left owns that territory

It's not Trump it's his ideas despite his personal failings. In 2016 those ideas won and the left and the establishment went into a panic that we still see today
Can DeSantis win on those issues? Hope so. Pretty good chance he does go Bushie though and try to win that way
