I also tried to give them what I just considered to be common sense advice. Keep your hands on the wheel, don't go digging under the seat or in the glove box and be respectful and polite. Didn't feel I had to do this because my kids are black did it because it just seemed like good advice.

None of my boys are angels. But knock on wood nobody has ever been arrested or in any legal trouble.

Everyone I know got some version of "the talk" growing up. But seeing James Woods in The Onion Fields showed me that cops have a reason to be anxious and defensive, too.

And I can't believe the shit they have to deal with today, with the tinted windows, uncooperative drivers, the omnipresence of some behavior-changing drug, and the full knowledge that they'll get blamed with 20-20 hindsight for anything that goes wrong, no matter how big of an asshole or criminal the driver is.

Of course there are good cops and bad cops, but when I hear or read smart-asses lumping them all together as one group, I know I'm dealing with someone who can't think for themselves and hasn't grown into adulthood yet.

Most people, regardless of color don’t need the talk. Why? Because the vast majority of people aren’t going to decide the time and place to settle a legal issue isn’t on the side of the road while wrestling with a cop. It’s pretty intuitive actually.

Most people, regardless of color don’t need the talk. Why? Because the vast majority of people aren’t going to decide the time and place to settle a legal issue isn’t on the side of the road while wrestling with a cop. It’s pretty intuitive actually.

You're speaking Adult-Speak. Most of these subjects stop developing into adulthood when they turn 12 or 13 and have learned that they can lie and manipulate their way through life by blaming and abusing other people. And there will always be a family or community member nearby to make a laundry list of excuses for their anti-social and criminal behavior.

In my kids' experience in Seattle schools, all I saw was mostly white liberals going to ridiculous lengths to prove how not racist they were. None were worse than brand new teachers, straight out of college, or older teachers, particularly female, who seemed to think their age alone made them more viewable as racist than their younger peers.

Either way, hardly were black kids and parents oppressed or discriminated against. Quite the contrary. Their asses were licked daily. I'm guessing I might have very high self-esteem, too, if people ostensibly in positions of power and prestige licked my ass every day.

But again, that may just be my whiteness talking.
