why the fuck can we never get off the field on 3rd and long against decent(?) teams? for all the blowing of lake and kawasaki, it seems like Ive been watching the defense give up crucial conversions for years

UW played with 1-2 high safeties all game, which helps prevent the deep ball or explosive plays. Stanford saw that and took what UW was giving them which were the short and intermediate routes. In the first half, our CBs played soft and allowed the outside slant on almost every play. That changed in the 2nd half and you saw Taylor and Gordon break them up more consistently.
Another issue was lack of contain.
We're seeing Bronson line up on the edge because our 2nd and 3rd string OLB are true freshman who struggle in run support. We're really missing Bowman (and Tryon) when it comes to run support, and if our LB are slow to react (or if an OL targets Ulo), we're essentially screwed. Stanford saw this from the Utah game and killed us on the ground. We adjusted in the 4th quarter, but too little, too late.
