Pac-12 issues statement regarding UW-Cal fallout

-- Will the Bears and Huskies schedule a makeup game?

Possibly, yes.

When the Pac-12 revealed the seven-game schedule in early October, it designated Dec. 18-19 as 'Championship Week.'

On the 19th, the day after the conference championship game, the other 10 teams would play a seventh game.

The presumption at the time was a cross-division format, with No. 2 in the North playing No. 2 in the South, etc.

But that plan hasn't been finalized.

The conference could use Dec. 19 for makeup games.

In response to an inquiry by the Hotline, the conference issued the following statement:

"We have made the determination to preserve as much flexibility for these games as possible given the potential for COVID-19 disruptions that could lead to the need to reschedule important matchups. We plan to review games for this week later in the season and will make an announcement at that time on our approach."

-- Could the Cal-UW no contest impact the North race?

Yes, although it's unlikely.

If the Bears and Huskies were to tie atop the division -- for instance, both are 5-0 at the conclusion of Week Six games -- then the tiebreaker process would kick in.

Per the conference, the protocols are as follows:

1. Head-to-head results
2. Record in games played within the division
3. Record against the next highest placed team in the division (based on record in all games played within the Conference), proceeding through the division
4. Record in common Conference games
5. Team with the highest College Football Playoff (CFP) ranking

The head-to-head piece would be moot, of course, and the second, third and fourth steps would produce the same record for each team.

That brings us to No. 5, which is potentially problematic:

The relevant CFP rankings wouldn't be released until Dec.15 -- that's three days after the Week Six games and three days before the conference championship.

-- Is Cal's game at Arizona State on Nov. 14 in jeopardy?

Very much so.

According to Hotline sources, Cal's defensive line is the position group in quarantine.

The period lasts 14 days, according to Berkeley Public Health guidelines, and the players would be unable to leave the state.

However, the timeline for the quarantine could provide a morsel of hope. It begins at the point of last contact with the infected person.

Our understanding is that health officials are investigating the contact periods for each of the quarantined players. It's possible, although perhaps not likely, that some players could be released from quarantine prior to kickoff against ASU. (They have tested negative since the points of last exposure.

The Bears hope to have the situation resolved early next week, at the latest. -- Jon Wilner
