When I was a kid, my friend and I would take his dad's boat out to the log booms in Oakland bay, and get out and walk around on them. Bait fish and the cutthroat that ate them seemed to like to hang around under the booms, so we'd go out there with our rods and spend the day fishing. Back then, there were always tons of log booms in the bay waiting to get processed into lumber at the Simpson mill. There were also train loads of logs arriving at Simpson daily that you'd have to wait for when you were driving to the other side of town. Back then, there were big logs rolling into town, too - not the little pecker poles you see on log trucks now.
I don't know what the hell people in Shelton do for employment now - but there aren't any log booms in the bay because there's no mill downtown any more. Every time I'm in town, I see new apartments and houses going up, so apparently something's going on over there.

There was a long-lost British woman I knew named Tanya Keep. I drove her out to Fort Worden in Port Townsend. She loved An Officer and a Gentlemen. We got to this spot, and I said "recognize it?" She said no. I said, "This is where what's-his-name was doing leg lifts and had nowhere else to go." She freaked out and I took a picture of her on this spot kissing the ground. I wish I still had that pic.
