Another media bankruptcy

It will be interesting to see the near future for media. McClatchy was privately held for 150+ years. Now the family loses all stock, the pensioners all get screwed (this is going to really hurt them) and the common share holders all lose their stock as well. McClatchy was unique in that it was a king in print media since forever. They were typical in that they did not figure out how take advantage or make money in digital.

We all know print is dead but there is a second reason that the McClatchy's of the world are failing. Like their love of print, their love of liberalism and that one sided perspective doomed them to an ever shrinking audience. McClatchy is far left leaning and since the onset of Rush and FOX News, the bias sticks out like a sore thumb. They needed to diversify but their political ideology kept them from being fair and balanced. Refusal to diversify their offering and to stick to a print format doomed them. 15-20 years or so ago the Atlanta Journal Constitution made a push to be fair and balanced. They announced what they were doing and would remind all of us subscribers that such and such opinion or article was their effort to present a more Conservative perspective. THE AJC was losing subscribers at an alarming rate. To stem the tide they went against their liberal bias and attempted to provide two sides to stories, eliminate liberally biased and misleading headlines, print Conservative letters to the editor, provide a competing perspective on the editorial staff, etc. 10 years later the paper slid back into its liberal bias and was pretty up front about it. They lost 1000's of subscribers over night. They didn't care. They were liberal and that is what they were going to act like.

The paper went from 60 pages down to less than 35. The Sports section (the most popular) was cut way back and this made more subscribers drop their subscription. The paper is not a shell of what it used to be but that was because of the choices the liberals who run the paper made.

Like I said, it will be interesting to see what happens over the next couple of years. The NYT is destined for the bankruptcy heap, it is just a matter of time. They will tell you that it is just because of the digital age but as we all know that would be a lie.

The internet killed the newspaper star. When I graduated from law school at age 25 I had no money yet subscribed to the Oregonian, Sports Illustrated, Newsweek, Field and Stream and the National Review. That was really the only way to get any information. Today, money isn't a problem and I subscribe to zero paper products. I would subscribe to a local paper if they provided anything of value. The Oregonian is a far left publication and has Canzano as their lead sports columnist who I would pay not to read. Not a real strong business model. That paper is a walking dead man.
