In three less games Petersen's record is remarkably and uncomfortably close to Lambo. Pete did close out the two league titles that Lambo did not.
More remarkable - If Rick had been given 6 years and went 14-4 in his next games he would match Petersen's record.
Pete was in line with two coaches who ended up fired for not winning enough. And Rick understood how special the Rose Bowl is and won it.
Ages
James was 43 when hired. Jimmy is 42
Rick was 38.
Pete, Lambo, Gilby, and Ty were over 50. Gilby was 55. Pete and Ty 52. Lambo 50
Younger appears to be better. Hiring a coach with experience in his 50's seems to lead to these crisis of the mid life and early retirement. When James started he made 45 grand a year which was pretty decent in 1975 but you don't retire in 5 years off it.
One contract and a good adviser and you can walk away. So the fire has to be on the inside. Pete lost it
