People have been saying our defense is great this year because we're giving up 20 ppg and that's on par with 2016, 2017, 2018. And yes, we held Stanford to 23 yards, so the defense must've done alright, right?
Couldn't be further from the truth.
Our defense couldn't get a stop. This is an issue with our scheme. Bend-don't-break might work for high-octance offenses that are built to gash you with big plays, but it doesn't work against slow, methodical teams. Look at our losses against ASU, Stanford, Cal, etc. Those teams played keep-away from our offense. Stanford had twice the time-of-possession we did, and our scheme isn't able to adjust and be aggressive and force Stanford off their game. As long as we continue to play this style of defense, we're essentially going to continue to struggle against teams with decent QBs (Garbers, Manny Wilkins in 2017, etc.) that can dink and dunk against our zone and convert 3rd downs to drain the clock.
We had absolutely no pressure on the QB tonight. This is an issue with our gameplan. For an OL with 3 true freshman starting or whatever, there's no excuse for that. And we tried, too, which is the sad thing. Bryant should be the only DB that blitzes since all the others just run into the blocker to engage in pattycake. And when Mills had time, he was able to find open receivers against our zone or lob it to their tall WR where our DB had no chance of making a play.
We can't tackle. This is an issue with our players. So many time players are out of position, they dive and whiff, or they get dragged for several yards instead of lowering their pads and driving the ballcarrier into the ground. This is technique and for a coach who preaches technique throughout spring and fall camp, this is more of a concern about coaching that they allow these players to play without correcting these mistakes.
The offense deserves most of blame and it needs more attention right now (40 passes to 19 rushes???), but the defense deserves a fair share of the blame, too. People will point to the 23 points and that they gave the offense an opportunity to win it, but stats are for losers, and this is why stats are for losers. The defense has just as much to correct as the offense at this point.

They might be able to adjust and prepare a better gameplan, but they won't be able to fix the scheme or players issues this season.
But remember Ryan Bowmans height is actually an advantage.

I disagreed with a post then and I still don't think the defense sucks. Sure the linebackers are abysmal but not the overall defense.
