Even Rolling Stone knows Master of Puppets isn't just Metallica's greatest album, it's the greatest metal album of all time. The first time I heard Master I didn;t even know what the fuck was going on. Remember, it was 1985. Nothing like that had ever been done, so fast, so hard, so intricate. Wall of sound indeed. I so wish Cliff would have lived because they just kept getting better with him as their spiritual center...then he died, and Justice dropped off a bit, then the Black album dropped off quite a bit, and then they fell off a fucking cliff (lulz). Master is what all other metal albums are contrasted against.

And a Justice For All was the album when I was in Middle School. And all the Fast Strategy Kids had AJFA shirts and flannel. I was too Slow Strategy and didn't get heavier than Led Zeppelin II at the tim.

Yeah, it's a bit like wondering if Don James hadn't been fucked over what could have been. The drop off after Cliff died is so readily apparent and part of why, in my mind at least, Metal stayed in a niche category.
