UW Football: SEC aspiring AD, Ambiton, Tosh and Coffee Cups - Baseman

A week ago Ale Kaho was a rudderless young man. Despondent over the loss of two relatives. A pending divorce, ripping his parents apart, the uncertainty of leaving home from old western shanty town, Reno Nevada for rainbow flaged den of librialism—Seattle Washington.

Seattle Times UW beat reporter Adam Jude reported source close to Kaho described to him a sickly hollowed eyed teen. The depression and hopelessness Jude’s source painted implied a grim outlook for Kaho who reportedly had lost 20 pounds.

The turnaround over the last few days is nothing short of remarkable. Restored, his body replenished, Kaho after securing a release from UW granted for his well being, is now on his way to Tuscaloosa to play LB under recruiting guru and Tide DC Tosh Lupoi. The sudden change has Doogs everywhere crying, Foul! Bagman! Coffee Cups!

It was a coffee cup, stuffed with $1,500 given to UW recruit Andrew Bashman that tarnished Tosh’s reputation in Seattle and led to a $300,000 settlement payment and Lupoi’s ouster from Montlake.

I’m hearing where there’s smoke there’s fire. The narrative fits. Tosh wants player. Tosh writes handwritten letters—beautiful calligraphy. Promises are made. Money is given. Tosh gets player. The end. Or is it?

A January 12, 2012 Tacoma News Tribune article revealed Washington lured Lupoi from Cal with a lofty title and a hefty pay raise. Defensive line coach/run game coordinator Lupoi, the TNT reported received a 3 year deal for “$350,000 per year” guaranteed, a boat and what the TNT described as “what amounts to a $100,000 signing bonus.” Hmmm.

Shortly thereafter, then highly heralded Cal Bear commit Shaq Thompson had an ephinay and decided he wished to be a Washington Husky. Bear fans cried foul, going so far to say Tosh was a snake and that UW pried their prized recruit away with cold hard cash.

On the surface, if Tosh Lupoi paid Thompson to become a Husky, Lupois wallet would have taken a massive hit. Players of Thompson’s stature have reportedly received six figures from shadowy bagman to sign with an NCAA team. At $350,000 before taxes Lupois salary itself wasn’t enough.

Which begs the question just what was what was the purpose of that aforementioned “what amount[ed] to a $100,000 signing bonus” ?

Then Scott Woodward was quick to dole out the funds to restore UWs fledging football program to past glory. Woodward had high hopes when he hired brash USC OC Steve Sarkisian, who promised he would remold Husky program into an annual contender for Rosebowls and Nattys. Coming off Owen Tweleve Sarks energy and a five win season brought the Doogs, ashamed and downtrodden, out of hiding and clamoring for more. Sark delivered a winning season and seemed, outwardly anyway to be on the right track. After a beatdown in the Alamo Bowl Sark fired Nik Holt and got Woodward to pony up for new assistants, including Tosh Lupoi. Included was an increase in the recruiting budget.

Sarks extracurricular activities reached legendary proporations, including four figure bar tabs paid for by UW. This went on for several years under the watch of Woodward and the AD with seemingly no pushback. How could a University priding itself on academis allow hedonistic waste for athletics, long the anathema of upper campus? If the bar tabs were swept under the rug, what else was?

When Sark slipped town, Woodward soon did too, landing in College Station, a town short on atmosphere but flush with bagmen. With a turnaround and a massive stadium deal under his belt, Woodward came up smelling like the roses he never delivered to the Husky faithful (Hi AANDY!) Woodward of course recently made Jimbo Fisher the second highest paid coach in CFB.

Which leads us to this. Tosh Lupoi, while formidable is simply a pawn in a larger shadowy game. Cash, cars, homes, utility bills and monthly stipends ultimately land the elite high school recruits. High six figure salaries, low sevens, alone don’t get it done. Slush funds. General recruiting funds. It takes a village. Boone Pickens; Frontier Ford and Bellevue BMW.

Complicity. Duality. Both reign in big boy football. $100,000 and contingency money, the accounts can’t reconcile and write off might get Shaq Thompson. Without more green, welcome James Atoe.

Where have you gone Jim Kenyon and Herb Meade? Husky Nation turns its lonely eyes to you. Woo, woo, woo.

Your move Jen.
