Day Four for the Whores

No thoughts or notes of my own today. But didn't want to leave you without the juice I know you all crave!!!

On Monday, Benning Potoa'e and Ryan Bowman both got runs at the BUCK while Amandre Williams and Bowman took turns at SAM with the first unit. With the second unit, both Myles Rice and Joe Tryon both got reps at each spot while Ariel Ngata also got some run at SAM. Pete Kwiatkowski and Jimmy Lake have both made mention that each player on the field will be asked to handle different responsibilities, depending on the offensive formation and other things, so each outside linebacker has to be versed in playing both positions. The combination of Potoa'e and Bowman is intriguing because both are pass-rushers first and neither is seen as being great in coverage, but with those two being able to bring pressure off the edge on either side, it could wind up being devastating for offenses. Throw in Williams who can rush the QB or drop back into coverage and you could see all three on the field at the same time. Rice and Tryon are also interesting in that both are most definitely better at rushing the quarterback, but Rice has seemed to start gaining the coaches' trust more and we could see him on the field more this fall while Ngata seems to be coming into his own although he still needs to add some more bulk before he can truly push for playing time.

Sean McGrew seems to be making some strides and looks to be pulling away from Richard Newton and Kamari Pleasant in the running back rotation. There's no question who the top two runners are on the roster -- Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed -- but the third tailback job is wide open and it appears the third-year sophomore from So Cal has the inside track at securing that spot. McGrew is a decent receiver out of the backfield and he has showed the ability to find small creases and run through them to daylight. McGrew actually had a great day on Monday, making two nice cuts to get in the open field on a first down run and showing the speed to get to the edge.

The "rookies" are starting to make their mark on the team. Not all of them are making a huge impact, but you can see the exciting future some of them have while some of them will be major contributors this fall. The three defensive backs -- Kyler Gordon, Julius Irvin and Dominique Hampton -- all look like players who could wind up playing early. Irvin caught our eye today when we saw him line up at both safety and corner. Victor Curne and Matteo Mele both look like solid young linemen. Hopefully neither will be needed this year, especially Mele as he could stand to add some more bulk and strength, but both look like they have great futures. M.J. Ale also looks like a future star at right guard as well. Zion Tupuola-Fetui has looked outstanding rushing the quarterback. He's got a big frame and looks like an eventual strongside defensive end. He's playing some BUCK now, but we think he'll eventually grow into a player who puts his hand in the ground. Richard Newton also looks like a future gamebreaker with his abilities as a receiver and runner. While Austin Osborne and Marquis Spiker have the size, Trey Lowe is the player who looks like he could see the field earlier with his quickness and soft hands.

Joel Whitford is a weapon, we've already commented on that before, but he's been booming punts all camp long and when the coaches tell him they want him to use his rugby style, he makes it nearly impossible for a returner to make a play on it. One of his punts today, rolled a good 30 yards before rolling out for close to a 50 yard punt even though it only traveled about 20 yards in the air.

Some whispers at practice today say to watch out for this sleeper who could transfer in and take Alex's spot.

Again, this is just the whispers so please keep it contained here.

I don't think Potoa'e is a good pass rusher. He is too stiff and lumbering. Not quick twitch and elusive.

    Just my .02 cents.

Now that Kaho is officially ded to us do we think they will take another 2019 commit? If so, who might it be?
