China accounts for about 2% of our steel imports. This doesn't do jack shit to them.

Our poutine-eating, hockey-loving brethren to the north and our mezcal and taco-making brethren to the south are the primary countries impacted, along with Brazil.

Sounds like the EU effects them more than us?

it may all be moot if China does join modern steel manufacturing. Their edge has been production like the US in the 19th century. Very dirty
I can't find data, but I think it makes sense that Chinese steel could make it easier to Europe, or at least they compete for similar markets more frequently.
Not a big fan of this particular action, but who's steel goes where is meaningless...its a commodity and an optimization of shipping prices and nothing more. That is why its a pretty good bet whoever was the journalist moron that wrote the original article highlighting this does not understand the basics of a supply and demand curve.

China produces 50% of the global steel (and about 10x of what the US produces)...thinking this isn't aimed straight at them is FS.

Will be interesting to see the outrage if and when Trump really does cancel NAFTA like I think he actually might (and should)...if it happens it should be in a month or two.
Then they can aim it straight at them. The tariffs he's proposing are global.
Steel is a global commodity...putting a tariff one country's steel is meaningless because the bit that does come here will go somewhere else and the stuff that its displacing will just show up here. Its probably why China's steel doesn't come here directly to begin with...several former presidents have slapped them specifically with tariffs in the past. They probably responded by saying we'll send everything to X, and whoever use to send it to X can now send it to the US instead.

Just about every economist in the world will tell you that tariffs are stupid, ineffective, and only lead to higher consumer prices.

From that you can deduct that anyone defending tariffs is a fucking retard or a political ballwasher - or in Houston's case, both.

Truly, a Stable Genius. My guess (hope) is he'll backtrack on this as the market continues to tank and the GOP talks him out of it.
    https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/white-house/trump-was-angry-unglued-when-he-started-trade-war-officials-n852641

"There were no prepared, approved remarks for the president to give at the planned meeting, there was no diplomatic strategy for how to alert foreign trade partners, there was no legislative strategy in place for informing Congress and no agreed upon communications plan beyond an email cobbled together by Ross's team at the Commerce Department late Wednesday that had not been approved by the White House.

No one at the State Department, the Treasury Department or the Defense Department had been told that a new policy was about to be announced or given an opportunity to weigh in in advance.

The Thursday morning meeting did not originally appear on the president's public schedule. Shortly after it began, reporters were told that Ross had convened a "listening" session at the White House with 15 executives from the steel and aluminum industry.

Then, an hour later, in an another unexpected move, reporters were invited to the Cabinet room. Without warning, Trump announced on the spot that he was imposing new strict tariffs on imports.

By Thursday afternoon, the U.S. stock market had fallen and Trump, surrounded by his senior advisers in the Oval Office, was said to be furious."

    Dumbfucks did.

And people who work at HD.

The thousands of people who lost jobs in the sales and service of Japanese bikes didn't like them.

The HD case study is used as an example of how stupid tariffs are in many Econ text books.

Please explain why the tariffs will help this country? This will spark a trade war and the losers will be consumers.
I actually don't mind tariffs. This is essentially a consumption tax. The more imported crap you use, the more you pay.

I kind of wish we just had a national sales tax vs income tax anyway. At least everyone pays for this tax.
I could see how this could be your take - if you're a retarded weakling that needs tariffs to protect your shitty business model.

Go kill yourself, you tax loving donkey.
If you buy foreign cars you pay a premium. Big fucking deal.

Who even thinks this thing will pass? It’s postering. A nutless monkey can see that.
Yeah. Hyundai's and Kia's cost a fucking fortune.

    You're a nutless monkey.
Premium doesn’t mean expensive. When you have to pay $18k instead of $15k for a new Kia, that’s called paying a premium. I hope you now understand the difference you nutless monkey

I understand the difference between you and someone who isn't a faggot.

Go ahead and make your case to justify the 3 grand "premium" you stupid cunt.

Repealing NAFTA means you are in favor of direct trade agreements and not having countries dump things into Mexico and Canada to flood your markets via "NAFTA" free trade while you don't have the ability to even buy land in said country, much less sell any of your goods in that country.

    Keep gargling China's balls...

Too difficult for you to understand, eh? Figures...you pretty much have been at the HondoFS level for a while...

I'm assuming you do not realize the the big hang-up in the current NAFTA negotiations is the made in North America part, right? And with both Mexico and Canada signing TPP and us not that just opens that backdoor into the US market even more.

    Keep gargling China's nutsack...

Is Trump a democrat now? He sure seems to like raising taxes. Retarded move, it will hurt consumers, unless it's a temporary action to force concessions from bad actors like China and Canada.

So the US lost leadership on trade by not signing TPP? And China is in the driver’s seat for pacific rim trade while Canada and Mexico take advantage? Who let that happen?

If only the US was free to take advantage of its competitive advantages in high value products and services, and consumers could buy low value-added goods from overseas producers at low cost. That used to be standard GOP policy. Where has the GOP gone?

There’s a big “hang up” in NAFTA “negotiations?” Our trading partners know trump is a fool. Let the obese orangutan tell farmers in the Midwest there’s no market in Mexico anymore. They will buy from China, Brazil etc from now on.

I welcome your self destruction. I live in California.

What do economists say about dumping product into a market under cost to drive competitors into bankruptcy?

What economist made you the judge of that?

Precisely because you are an imbecile, the US and its international trading partners created the rules for adjudicating “dumping.” Even a strip mall stock broker at ed Jones In Lynwood or puyallup should know that. That conclusion is not let to your whim or the idiocy of an obese geriatric in the White House.

They say you're a dumb cunt and it's a waste of time to debate anything with you because your only interest is defending Trump.

All evidence points to them being correct.
